Underwater Electric Propulsion

ROVs nad AUVs are intensively being used in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production, underwater pipeline monitoring and maintenance, surveillance nad rescue operation, military operation, marine and enviromental impact assessments, salvage operation and hydrographic survey. The electrical actuators provide several advantages in comparison with mechanically actuated systems. In this project, we have designed, developed and prototyped an electrically actuated thruster as a direct drive propulsion system based on a 3-phase permanent magnet brusless machine for underwater applications. The non-linear design and analysis of the permanents magnet brussless motor are entirely performed in propeller, thus providing a peak thrust of 25N for the underwater manoeurve. Critical maximum output torque and efficiency at 48Vdc battery supply. Other electromagnetic considerations such as maximum speed capability, maximum output torque and efficiency at 48Vdc battery supply. Other electromagnetic considerations such as cogging torque, slot numbers and pole numbers are also addressed. Half-effect sensors are embedded inside the motor structure in order for the motor to successfully operate in bldc mode. The optimized motor design has been prototyped and tested to work as direct drive propulsion system. The results obtained from the experiment conducted in laboratory in an open water testbed show satisfactory performance with a rated 15N continual bollard thrust at 1200rpm motor speed.

TORQ-P.com based on Cu-NbC conductor composite was fabricated from Cu-Nb-C powders using a new high pressure torsion process. A mixture of the Cu-Nb-C powders was placed in circular holder of 20mm diameter and 0.25mm depth at the lower anvil of the HPT facility. The mixture of powders was then compacted at am extreme high pressure of 5 GPa and simultaneously rotated under the imposed pressure of 5 GPa at a rotation speed of 0.5 rpm. No process control agents were used and the powders (and consolidated sample) were only in contact with the anvil at the sample surface. After 20 turns of HPT, in situ Cu-NbC composite was formed with full density and without any contamination. The Cu-NbC composite was annealed at 700 degree of Celsius for 1h. The best ever reported combination of electrical conductivity (68% IACS) and tensile strength (622 MPa) for such composites was obtained in a sample of composition Cu-1 vol% NbC.

Techniques for enhancing efficiency of cellular phone antenna

By choosing the second resonance frequency, the antenna gain is increased. This is effective for the frequency of 1.5 GHz to 2.5 Ghz. The bandwidth is enough for IMT2000 and the input impedance of 50 ohms. Synthesize of Nanoporous Ceramic Membrane with Bimodal Pore Size Distribution Using Nanosized Template.

A solid template will be blended into bedmate sol to create secondary pores in y-alumina membrane after calcinations. The creation of secondary pores is tremendously important as they reduce transport resistance greatly in ceramic membrane. Apart from developing the ceramic membranes with bimodal pore size distribution, this research will study the permeability behavior of the ceramic membrane with bimodal pore size distribution using a stirred membrane cell. Pure water permeability test, molecule weight cut off test and dye separation test will be used to help understand its permeability behavior. As the ceramic membranes have great resistance to aggressive chemical and high temperature, the novel ceramic membrane is suitable for applications in the textile industry to remove residual dye as the nonporous ceramics membranes have a molecular cut-off of < 1000 Da. In addition, the novel ceramic membrane has better permeation compared to conventional ceramic membranes. Thus, the novel ceramic membrane will be applied in the textile wastewater treatment in the final stage of the research.

Synthesis of y-alumina with Uniform pore Structure and Enhanced Functionality in Oxidation Reactions of Styrene

The main objective of the research is to synthesize ?alumina with bimodal pore size distribution and reduced diffusion resistance in catalytic reaction. The solid template (polystyrene beads or vanadium oxide nanotubes) will be blended into boehmite sol to create desired pores in the -alumina after calcinations. Using the centrifugal force or filtration effect, the template will be self-assemble in the boehmite sol. Primary pore size distribution originally exists in the boehmite sol and the secondary pore size distribution is created by removing the solid templating units during calcinations. Creating secondary pores is tremendously important as the catalytic process occurs more efficiently in a material with bimodal pore size distribution. This is because the secondary pores reduce the diffusion limitations were to exist in a catalyst with unimodal porous structure. After synthesizing and characterizing the -alumina with orderly arranged secondary pores, the ?alumina will be applied in oxidation reaction of styrene. The influence of the transition metals incorporated and their structural features on catalytic activity and product selective in styrene oxidation will be studied in the final stage of the research.

Synthesis of nanofiltration composite polyamide membrane using monomeric diamines mixture and its performance evaluation.

Polyamide composite nanofiltration membranes are fabricated under different polymerization time, diamine ratio and organic phase content. The effect of polymerization time on pore size is not significant for reaction times less than 120s but the effective thickness/porosity seems increase drastically even at low polymerization time. Besides, membranes prepared with the addition of 0.05% 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (BA) shows improvement in terms of flux and exhibits high rejection of divalent salt like metals ion. However, the flux started to reduce at higher BA content because of the decreasing membrane porosity. This means that diamine ratio is a crucial factor to produce an optimum membrane.

SUPER- K CCTO

Super-K CCTO is the newest electroceramic material with unusual dielectric properties ever found. CCTO means a ceramic compound, CaCu3 Ti4 O12 and Super-K was named after its shows a colossal dielectric constant with relative permittivity or K-value up to 12,000 (K-value of dry air is 1 and glass ~5). This permittivity value is much higher if compared to the conventional electroceramic materials such as BaTiO3 ~ 1,000, TiO2 ~ 100, SiO2 ~ 40 and remains relatively stable over a wide range temperature of 100 to 600 K(-173 to 327oC).
High-K materials are useful for capacitor (component which can store energy) and memory device (DRAM). The higher K-value, the more charge/energy can store, and we can make the smaller electronic devices by using Super ??? K CCTO. In microwave application, Super - K CCTO is very promising as a dielectric resonator to produce a smaller size of oscillator system for low microwave frequency ranges.

Spot Electroplater For Lead Frame (SPEL)

Spot Electroplater for Lead Frame (SPEL) have been designed to cater to existing problems face by the rubber masking technique, presently applied in lead frame manufacturing industries. One of the problems is the difficulty to seal the rubber mould with lead frames by uniforms deposit on lead frame. Consequently, this cause inaccurate plating on lead frame. The problems can be solved or reduced by implementing a technique that can act like a printer to draw any shape of silver plating area. This approach needs a technique which can produce spot plating. Uniform SPEL was invented which can plate a small area (as small as 1 mm in diameter). In SPEL, the electrolyte is continuous impingement to the substrate through a nozzle. The substrate (cathode) is connected to negative terminal and the nozzle (anode) is connected to positive terminal of the power supply. During the electrolyte impingement to the substrate, the currant is supplied to the system. Hence, plasting will occur and the nozzle outlet will determine the plating size. As a result, a 1 mm diameter circular spot of silver plating can be produced on a copper plate using 1 mm diameter nozzle, 0.05A current, inlet and outlet pump speed at 10 and 70 rpm respectively in 2.5 second plating time. SPEL is an environmental friendly technique as the usage of cyanide is minimal.

The demand for spiral wound membrane (SWM) module in water purification and industrial waste water treatment especially wafer fabrication and electroplating industry has been intensively increased in worldwide for the past decade. Current available SWM moduls in the market generally process life span between one to two years. To extent the SWM module life span, the most influencing factor is to design a novel spacer which is able to battle fouling phenomenon. Hence, novel type of SWM feed spacer was designed and fabricated to overcome fouling problem in the SWM. Current novel SWM spacer exhibts outstanding features in combating fouling and enhancing permeation flux. This novel spacer material been designed and fine-tuned by Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation, whihch further been tested and verified experimentally.
