Kaedah Pengawalan Spesies Crown-Of-Thorns (COT) Starfish

Penyelidik darI FRI Bintawa bersama dengan Sabah Parks
telah berjaya mencipta satu kaedah membunuh COT dengan kos
yang rendah, menjimatkan masa, mudah, mesra alam dan dapat
digunakan oleh penyelam rekreasi. Kaedah yang digunakan adalah suntikan sodium bisulfate ke atas individu COT.
Sebelum kaedah ini digunapakai di laut atau lapangan, satu kajian in-vitro ke atas 6 spesimen COT dewasa di makmal juga dijalankan. 4 spesimen tadi disuntik dengan sodium bisulfate dan 2 individu lain dijadikan sebagai piawai dan tidak disuntik. Pemerhatian ke atas 6 spesimen ini dilakukan selama 24 jam. Kaedah ini juga digunapakai di lapangan untuk melihat keberkesanannya untuk membunuh haiwan ini. Soal selidik dengan kakitangan resort juga di lakukan untuk membandingkan kaedah yang pernah di praktikkan. Kos bahan untuk menggunakan kaedah ini yang boleh diangap murah dan efektif selepas mengambil kira faktor tenaga dan masa berbanding dengan kaedah-kaedah lain.

Bubu Ikan Lipat Sarawak(Sarawak Collapsible Fish Trap)

Satu inovasi yang dinamakan Bubu Ikan Lipat Sarawak telah berjaya dibangunkan oleh FRI Bintawa Sarawak. Pada tahun 2006. Inovasi ini masih ditambah baik sehingga 2010. Idea asal inovasi ini tercetus semasa perlaksanaan projek penyelidikan bertajuk Pembangunan Teknologi Penangkapan Ikan di Kawasan Terumbu dan Dasar Kasar. Kerangka utama bubu ikan yang direka ini diperbuat daripada rod besi yang mempunyai ketebalan 10 mm yang sangat kuat dan tahan lama. Kerangka yang diperbuat daripada besi bertindak untuk menguatkan
struktur bubu dan membantu menstabilkan bubu ini di dasar lautan terutama semasa keadaan laut yang bergelora. Kerangka kompartmen tangkapan diperbuat daripada rod besi berdiameter 3 mm. Batang besi ini boleh dilipat mengikut saiz dan bentuk kompartmen. Kerangka utama dan kompartmen tangkapan ikan dilitupi dengan jaring polyethylene 36 ply dan saiz mata jaring 3 inci. Struktur separa bulat dan gelang dibina pada kerangka utama bubu bagi membolehkan rangka bubu dilipat dengan mudah.

WebNRW: Web Based Non Revenue Water Management System

Non revenue water (NRW) figures for all the states in Malaysia are still above the Government targeted figures. The Government is keen on the NRW reduction programs as this will increased the revenue of the water authorities and indicated good governance.

Presently, NRW components have been identified by the water authority but there is no classification of NRW components in relation to the layout of the water distribution network. This is due to the unstructured data collection which resulted in difficulty in data consolidation. This make it impossible for the water authority to validate the NRW figures and therefore efforts in NRW reduction cannot be done.

A conceptual model for the water distribution network has to be formalized for the purpose of identifying the source/location of water loss and non revenue consumption. The NRW components will have to be classified according to the distribution network to capture the source and magnitude of the components. A work procedure to calculate and validate the NRW has to be formulated. This can be done when a detailed analysis on the distribution model and data is done.

This system required a flexible manipulation, fast transmission and efficient storage for displaying the content. This study introduces a new method for marketing agricultural products online that depends on visualizing the rural crops market for customers to expend the rural marketability. This study presents a WebCROPS prototype application for the case of Changlun, Kedah in Malaysia. WebCrops eliminates wholesalers, and focuses direct deals between farmers and customers.

VRTEM: Virtual Reality Technology In Museum

This study aims to identify the suitable model for building virtual museum and the essential elements for managing technology based product. Since the majority of these models derive from immersive virtual reality, a new architecture was formed with the basic elements involved in that environment. It has found that 3D models are a good attraction where user can experience the virtual as if it was reality. Lighting was used to brighten up the environment and the many interesting objects. Camera is used as an 'eye' view where users can freely walk through the environment from the camera view. collision detection was added in camera setting to ensure the collision in that environment truly occurs when user hits the project. While video are used to replace display screen in immersive environment, texture mapping are used to imitate reality surface objects. In addition, this study has discovered some design issues during development activity. This whole has adapted the Systems Development Research methodology. The key step includes the design and development of the Virtual Museum prototype itself. At the phase, besides management techniques of camera, lights and texture elements, the researcher also has succeeded in managing the walk through technique with collision detection and putting videos in VR. File management enable the researcher to access sources much easier. Indirectly, the development of this prototype has overcome these problems and answered the first research question all at one time. The outcome of this prototype was successfully developed using right development management techniques. Henceforth, this study also aims to test the usability of this system to users in using Technology Acceptance Model. Perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment are the independent variables in testing intention to use by visitor. Theoretical framework was produced and hypotheses were developed and tested using Spearmen Correlation Matrix and Regression Analysis. It has found that all hypotheses were supported, where the most influent factor is Perceived Usefulness followed by Perceived Enjoyment and Ease of Use. The output of this research is the Virtual Museum prototype of Kedah State Museum, provided with interactivity and ability to represent the real physical environment digitally. Hopefully this research can be a guideline to virtual museum developers to develop video application and three dimension walk through system construction.

Virtual Robot Arm In Assisting Robotics Students' Learning

Virtual Reality (VR), declared as the next step technologies after multimedia is believed to give a great impact in educational system as it provides alternative tools for teaching. With it enhance features it could be a turning point where it gives a new interesting and exciting environment that could motivate students' learning and interest in particular subjects. One of the benefits that VR offers is the ability to visualize physical object which student can have the trial and error session before actually practicing it on real things. Here comes to the point where the idea of having virtual robot in assisting students learning emerged. Instead of studying the physical robot in class, students can study the virtual robot on computer at home prior to class or even in the class itself

Students who ware taking the robotic courses in universities confront with the problems of the basic robotic principles understanding due to lack exposure. The same problem occurs in universities as more robotics equipment is needed to fulfill the needs of more students. The major problem facing many institution proposing a course in robotic is amount and type of students' exposure the real robots. It is important for the students to be exposed to the robots in their learning process. Due to the physical robot being expensive, many academics institution cannot facilitate enough robots to the entire class. Therefore, utilizing VR as a tool to develop fully-functional 3D virtual robots can substantially minimize the ownership cost.

This project focuses on utilizing VR technology for development of virtual robot to assist students' leaning. VR is a good solution to the hardware and time saving teaching method problem. This is due to its pervasive in its applications; the cost of the technology will eventually drop and the quality of experiences with VR system will improve.

With the prototype of virtual robot developed, its potential to oversea not only education but in construction, manufacturing, advertisement and marketing. For an example, firms and company can control their robot from the virtual robot. Training can be done preliminary by using virtual robot before handling physical robot. Hence this could reduce the cost of error during the manipulation of the physical robot.

The prototype developed can be commercialised to all of the institution which are teaching the robotics. It also have a potential to be commercialised to other industries which involved the robotic course.

Virtual Interview Trainer using Speech Recognition

Virtual Interview Trainer (VIT) is an application that prepares the students for job interviews by means of a virtual interview training method. It trains them by having an avatar to interact with asking common job interview questions. The interview is recorded and can be replayed for self-monitoring. This helps improve the confidence of the students to communicate in English. VIT has an integrated automatic speech recognition (ASR) capability which recognizes certain verbal responses. It uses a novel single frame spectrum envelope method which is faster to process speed and accuracy compared to conventional multiple frame speech recognition processes like Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC). This trainer also displays the interview performance score according to the interviewees verbal responses. If the interviewee failed to perform well, the avatar will angrily cut short the interview.

Virtual Flood Management Support System

Flood is a type of natural disaster which needs prompt response from the responsible agencies in managing the emergency situation. In Malaysia, flood management involves multiple agencies that operate as one committee at three different levels; district, state and national. Flooding can occur at any time and any place due to the changes in global weather and development. People were caught in flooding unexpectedly due to unawareness of oncoming flood and agencies involved in providing assistance were unable to operate efficiently due to lack of information and uncertainty. The difficulties observed in manually managing flood at various levels and places in Malaysia have motivated this work in developing a virtual flood management support system.

Inefficient and delay in response during flooding is the major problem of disaster management in many places of the world especially in developing countries like Malaysia. This is due to the absence of the disaster management system that can be used by the flood committee. A computer support system is required in assisting the response committee to provide prompt response to the flood victims. The committee should be able to access the system virtually as communication between from one place to another is not possible during flooding. The system should be comprehensive enough in recording and providing data and information related to flood activities such as flood alertness, flood response and flood reporting.

Virtual flood management support system is developed to improve the overall flood management operation of the flood committee. The system is intended to record and provide information on flooding and support the various activities in the three phases of flooding: before, during and after.

The virtual flood management support system can be used by the flood management committee at either national, state or district level. This system provides, the management of flood response activities as well as producing reports when flood is over. Prompt response to the flood victims can be provided by the agencies that are responsible in managing the emergency situation. This system provides the recording of information related to the flood management support activities and the committee can use the information for decision making.

The system can be used by all flood management committee in Malaysia at various levels of management. It also can be customized to meet the international requirement of managing the flood operations.
