Effect of Seaweed and Geotextile on Seawater Quality and Fish Growth in a Fish Hatchery

Farmed animals are hostage to the water quality. They have certain requirements of their environment that must be met if they are to survive. For most of these requirements there is an optimum level and range within which they survive, albeit in a stressed state. How severe the stress is will depend on how far the water parameter is from the stocked animal's optimum levels. Outside this range, the animal will die.

Development of Species-Specific Markers for Pyrodinium bahamense Var. Compressum Based on 18s Ribosomal DNA Sequences

Pyrodinium red tides (or harmful algal blooms, HABs) have been a frequent phenomenon in the coastal waters of west Sabah since it was first reported in 1976. The species, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum produces toxins in shellfish known as paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). PSP in humans is caused by consumption of shellfish contaminated with these toxins produced by the HAB species. PSP is the syndrome caused by toxins called saxitoxins. Saxitoxins are neurotoxins that act to block the movement of sodium through nerve cell membranes, stopping the flow of nerve impulses causing the symptoms of PSP, such as numbness, paralysis, disorientation and also death through respiratory paralysis, there is no antidote for PSP. The identification og the causal species Pyrodinium bahamense var, compressum in field samples is problematic because the red tides do not discolour the water and the species occur in low cell densities. Identification of the red tide algae using light microscopy is time-consuming and tedious when detecting the target species among the complex natural communities in the seawater sample. Development of a DNA probe for specific red tide species can assist in rapid identification, which contributes to the early detection of toxic red tides in the future. Specific oligonucleotide primers were developed for the identification and detection of the red tide alga, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum. The oligonucleotide primers were directed against the ribosomal DNA region of the Pyrodinium. This oligonucleotide primer can be developed as a DNA probe specifically for the identification of Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum. However, the oligonucleotide primer should be evaluated under field conditions for several years before confirmation of its specificity.

Cassava Composite Lumber (CCL) From Agriculture Waste Of Cassava Stems

Social and economic developments of humans are largely dependent on the better utilization available resources. Humans have from ancient times made great use of wood-based products as they are the most available resource. Increased environmental consciousness particularly on recycling of traditional materials, unprecedented forest resource degeneration and global warming, however has led to world-wide efforts to develop bio-composites from non-wood resources. Sustainable lignocellulosic resources are available in different forms of non-wood based fibers and agricultural residues. Non-wood commercial fibers include jute, sisal, kapok, kenaf, flax, hemp, ramie, etc. Agriculture residues include stalks of most cereal crops, rice husks, coconut fibers (coir, bagasses, maize cobs, peanut shell and other agriculture residues). Non-wood lignocellulosic resources have for a long time being used to produce composites. Today, the men-made lignocellulosic composites are becoming attractive in both commercial and non-commercial applications.Plant-based composite, especially those from the agriculture residues plants may in the future become materials to replace wood and polymer based composite in terms of their attractive specific properties, lower cost, simple processing technologies, eco-friendliness and ability to be recycled after use. The performance and quality of the plant fiber-based composite can be further improved by adopting appropriate engineering techniques. Must of the recent developments of bio-composites from non-woody lignocellulosic resources have been aimed at improving the quality and performance of the product. However, apart from attaining these core attributes, the composites produced from these resources offered several other advantages among them being the achievement of improved mechanical properties.

Banana Fiber Plastic Composite

Now days, agriculture is an important sector in Malaysian economy. Traditionally, agriculture materials have been shipped away for processing or disposed after post harvest. Diversification of the industry is crucial in encouraging economic stability and growth. Value-added processing would helps in agricultural diversification. Banana trunk, is a waste bi-product of banana cultivation. Hence, banana trunk fiber can be obtain for industrial purposes without any additional cost. Agriculture residues, produced from commercial processing of crop plants, are usually considered of a small inherent value and create disposal problem. However, these materials could in many cases represent an abundant, inexpensive and ready available source of renewable lignocellulosic biomass for different purposes. Banana plant is among those raw materials. In the world, 4,500,000 ha of cultivated area are occupied by banana plantations.Banana fiber plastic composite can be applied in the automotive industry such as for car dashboard, truck cover and upper interior part. This product also can be applied in the construction sectors. This products eventually will reduce the usage of polypropylene in the plastic industry at the same time utilize an agricultural residue to the fullest.

Aquamat And Aquaponic Application For Water Recycling In Aquacultrure

Conserving precious water resource is absolutely essential to protect the environment during this period of of climate change. Aquaculture uses a large volume of water and often the discharge contains substances that adversely affect the environment. A new system that uses polymers in the form of aquamat and uses fish and plants that form food crops and makes use of nutrients that would otherwise pollute the environment if discharged is presented here. It is a model of environment friendly, low-carbon and efficient aquatic food production system. Aquamat forms a 3D structure that provides substrate for biological filters for water quality remediation by way of removal of ammonia and nitrite. Aquaponic combines fish and plant stocks in one unit. The waste originating from feeding and excretion in fish tanks is diverted to grow beds where seaweeds and other plant crops assimilate it into biomass for growth. The water thus purged of the waste products is diverted to fish tanks and this recycling process continues.

ACTIDERM - Natural Solution for Skin Infection

Emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is regarded as an inevitable phenomenon and its increasing incidence has brought a new sense of urgency to the discovery and development of new antibacterial drugs. Regardless of the amount of investment involved in antibiotic discovery, there seems to be a finite life for the use of every drug without the fear of resistance. Present innovation was initiated to establish the potential use of locally sourced marine halogenated metabolite as "lead pharmaceutical compounds" in an effort to facilitate discovery of new drugs and combat the increase in antibacterial resistant bacteria. ACTIDERMc is produced using four halogenated chamigrenes isolated from red algae, Laurencia majuscula HARVEY, and formulated in kappa-carrageenan moisturing gel extracted from the commercially cultivated Kappaphycus alvarezii DOTY.
