WLAN Indoor Location Identifier

This invention is an indoor location identification system that utilizes received signal strength (RSS) readings from wireless local area (WLAN) access points in fixed positions that are located strategically in an indoor environment. Each specific ponts in a map under the coverage of designated reference wireless accrss points corresponds to a unique RSS fingerprint vector. A mobile user collects RSS vectors as he/she travels from point to point in the area. The sample vector is then matchedd to the closest RSS fingerprint vector which is stored within a RSS fingerprint database.

Waste to Wealth: Coal Fly Ash to Na-a-Zeolites

Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product of power generation, is rich in silica and alumina. Using the Box-Behnken Design(incorporating statistical software) and a domestic microwave oven, the silica and alumina have been successfully extracted from the CFA. The concentration of Si4+ and AI3+ ions were determined by ICP-OES and found to be comparable with those obtained from the thermal extraction reactions at 550C. Prior to hydrothermal treatment, the silica to alumina ratio in the extracts was adjusted using aluminium foil and the products were found to be gibbsite.

Virtual Instrument Based Power Quality Recorder/Analyzer

The proposed power quality recorder/analyzer (also known as PQScope) is developed based on the concept of virtual instrument that utilizes the computing power of personal computer which greatly enhanced the recorder and analysis capability and reduces the cost of the recorder significantly. Virtual instrument concept also allows easy and flexible upgrade of recorder hardware and add-on of analysis software to cater the need of any new measurement requirement. PQScope was implemented using the proposed novel integrated signal processing algorithm that utilized RMS, Fourier and Wavelet analysis for power quality event characterization and assessment.

V-Gen TM a vibration-based micropower generator for self powered sensor node

This device can be positioned on a gas turbine in power plant where at a critical vibration pattern it will generate power to activate a wireless sensor to caution for maintenance. This product has been developed to work at a wide frequency vibration response and has patent pending. It is the first of its kind in Malaysia and this work is being carried out to be implemented at one of the Tenaga Nasional Berhad power plant.

Uniten's Examination Scheduling System

One of the main challenges of scheduling university examination is ensuring that the examinations are adequately spaced out to allow adequate time for preparation. Automated methods have been successful in generating high quality timetables and the system that we developed for Uniten uses a unique way of assigning the examination effectively. The algorithm is based on heuristics. It has been shown to provide much better results than the manually scheduled examination timetables. combining the algorithm with a simple hill-climbing approach produces even better results. The web-basead application uses Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft SQL Server.

The tribological behaviour of nanoparticle as an additive in lubricant

Nanoparticles, the microscopic particle with at least one dimension less than 100 nm, have been recognized as suitable additives in lubricants due to their ability to roll like ball bearings between two shearing surface. Lubicants are ona of the key catalyst to the development of major industries such as heavy machinery, power generation, marine, aerospace, medical etc. The main functions of lubricants are: protection against wear and corrosion, reduction in friction,heat transfer, removal of contaminants and debris. This project successfully demonstrates significant reductions in the wear and friction damages on the mechanical parts via highly efficient and cost effective strategy.

Smart Halal Food Auditor (SHFA)

Smart Halal Food Auditor (SHFA) is a unique innovation that can be used assist Halal Food Producers to measure their compliance while continuously maintaining their conformance to MS1500:2009 requirements. This invention was drawn up following a survey of Halal Food Producer???s perceptions of the importance and performance of the 8 requirements of MS1500:2009 guidelines. The survey findings (IPM Tools) were used to devise this invention to help Halal Food Producers to audit their own implementation of MS1500:2009 before the enforcer from JAKIM audits their implementation. Exhibit 1 presents the innovation process of SHFA. The niche of SHFA is that it can be commercialized to assist Halal Food Producers in: i) assessing their conformance to MS1500:2009 requirements via the software; ii) providing accurate and immediate results; iii) acting as a monitoring system for the companies??? Halal committee; and iv) using resources efficiently. It is evident that this invention adds value by being cost effective and time efficient plus it is an environmental concern.

Short Holding Time in Developing Nano-Bioceramic Composite for Dental Application

In this invention, a novel technique based on a wet chemical method was tailored to produce ultra pure Synthetic Hydroxyapatite (SHA) powder that composed of nano-range crystallites v(<100nm) which exhibited excellent sinterability at low firing temperatures with short holding time of 1 minute. The synthesize nano-SHA exhibited excellent densification behavior when compared to commercially available powders. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the resulting nano-SHA body prepared using the synthesized powders was enhanced by the incorporation of magnesium oxide (Mg) via a novel processing method based on ultrasonification and mechanical miling.

Rubbercrete Hollow Blocks: Novel Solution for Industrialized Building in Malaysia

Modified rubbercrete hollow block made of cement, fly ash, silica fume, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate partially replaced with crumb rubber collected from waste rubber reproduction plant. This rubbercrete hollow blocks exhibit potential for use as a direct substitute for conventional concrete hollow blocks. Its strength as an engineering material appears to lie in their ability to reduce the heat transmission, increase the electrical resistivity and improve sound absorption. In addition, the rubbercreate hollow blocks can be used as a bearing systems.

Pressure Sensing Utilizing Linear Cavity Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser

The pressure sensor structure utilizes a linear cavity erbium-doped fiber laser which is formed by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) at one end of laser cavity. The FBG acts simultaneously as a wavelength reflector and pressure sensor to measure static pressure applied by a shock tube facility. The sensor is tested to measure a static pressure from 0 to 10 bar. The fiber laser pressure sensor has characteristics of simple configuration, high output power of 3.571dBm, stable output wavelength and power and high signal-to-noise ratio over 55 dB .This sensor is expected to be an attractive choice for long-distance pressure monitoring

Predicting Breast Cancer Disease Using Data Mining Technique

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide and occurs in nearly one out of eight women. Currently there are three techniques to diagnose breast cancer: mammography, FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) and surgical biopsy. Generally, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Classification of cancerous cells as either malignant or benign is a serious and life-altering decision. If the physician diagnoses a benign cancer as malignant, the patient may undergo unnecessary testing and damaging to the patients health and of a physician diagnoses a malignant cancer as benign, the consequences can be much worse. These consequences being rampant spreading of the cancer resulting in extreme sickness or death. Breast Cancer Prediction System is an automatic diagnosis system for detecting and classifying breast cancer based on feed-forward back propagation algorithm. The model to classify breast cancer tumor based on symptoms that cause the breast cancer disease is proposed. Several neural networks model were created and trained using different number of neurons in hidden layer. An experiment using back propagation algorithm is done to investigate the potential of neural network model as outcome classifier. From the experiment, it is found that neural network model that has hidden layer 7 achieve the highest accuracy among others. The proposed feed-forward backpropagation algorithm performance is compared with other 2 classifiers and it showed the feed-forward backpropagation algorithm is the best classifier to predict breast cancer disease. The system provides more cost-effective and easy-to-use systems for supporting clinicians. For the breast cancer tumor diagnosis problem, experimental results show that the concise models extracted from the network achieve high accuracy rate of on the training data set and on the test data set. Breast cancer tumor database used for this purpose is from the University of Wisconsin (USI) Machine Learning Respiratory.

A new approach of measurement was used as a solution for the limitation in the existing instruments. The results indicated the new instrument was highly reliable and conform to the existing framework suggested by IIA.

Mitigating Human-Human Collaboration Problem using Software Agents

In human-centered collaboration, the issues of adhering to deadlines and the lack of enforcement in work schedules present major problems in collaborative work. The diversity of tasks imposed on humans and the procedures attached to them also pose a challenge in keeping time to remember and implement scheduled tasks. To address some of these problems, we use the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) agent communication language (ACL) to implement communicative language (ACL) to implement communicative interactions and subsequent collaboration between Software Agents.
Agents update and monitor their environments, by which they perform autonomous actions through a common set of ontology. An interface for each agent, as shown below, provides a convenient means for humans to delegate mundane tasks to software agents. The use of such interface and the subsequent interactions performed by agents and between agents contribute to the achievement of a shared goal.

Loose Palm Fruit Picker

Oil palm fruits are clustered as bunches before being harvested from the palm oil tree. Due to height of falling of the bunches, loose palm oil fruits are separated from the main bunch due to impact of the bunch falling to the ground during harvesting. The current method to collect loose fruits collection is important because it will boost the crude oil production rate between 1%-2% from current average 20% yield from totally weight of the fruit bunch. The Loose Oil Palm Fruit Picker device has been designed, developed and tested in the oil palm fields to pick up loose oil palm fruit from then ground. Results show that the device is capable to collect the fruits from the ground and effective separate the debris from the fruits into a collection bag. The separator is able to separate loose fruits and debris whereby ,ore than 90 percent debris can be separated efficiently. The fruit picker utilizes vacuum power produced by a cubic cylinder petrol engine The design is versatile, mobile, and compact, light efficient and effective loose oil palm fruit picking in the terrains of a typical oil palm plantation.

Intelligent Water Quality Prediction System

This system adopts Artificial Intelligent (AI) approaches (of hybrid Kohonen Self Organizing Maps and Fuzzy Logic) in modelling and predicting the water quality in terms of the growth of coliform and e-coli for tropical lakes and natural wetlands of Putrajaya, Malaysia. The main motivation behind the invention is due to fact that the presence of bacteria in water particularly e-coli is hazardous and can cause serious deceases such as cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, etc. Whereas on the other hand the presence of bacteria cannot be easily detected by human senses- thus, it is highly desirable to predict the water quality by easily observed ecological factors such as temperature, pH and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) that is known to have significant influence to the growth of bacteria coliform in water. The overall system has been trained and tested for its accuracy on a reliable database that provides samples of relevant parameters from tropical Putrajaya Lakes and Wetlands over a period of five years. The system has demonstrated prediction up to 90.5% of accuracy.
