The main objectives of this study are (1) to determine the taxonomic relationship between Prorocentrum and Dinophysis based on platelet configutarion in the periflagellar area or the sulcal area of the theca; (2) to investigate similarities and differences in the plate configuration of the periflagellar areas of Prorocentrum; (3) to identify additional taxonomic characteristics to be used in the classification of Prorocentrum species; and (4) to determine the molecular phylogeny of Prorocentrum species based on mitochondrial cytochrome b.

No More Smoking Burners-UMS Helps in Developing a Smoke Emission Control System

TA burner smoke emission control device was invented by Ir. Philip Yong (IC No. 421219-12-5031) and patented (Malaysian Patent 111240) in 1999. There appears to be no such device commercialized to date. Ir. Yong has been awarded a Cradle grant to commercialize his invention and to quantify the effectiveness of the invention. Typical single stage industrial scrubbers which remove particulates from exhaust gas using water have an efficiency between 60 to 80% removal of particulates with a water use of 0.45-0.55 litres of water per m3 of exhaust air [1,2]. The invention works by spraying water onto the smoke produced from a burner to cool it and then forced through a mechanical mixing process diving dissolve chamber (DDC, Item 60 in the patent). The gas is released through a rotating exhaust while the water continues to collect more smoke emissions until the water is replaced. Sawdust, wood stick and tyre tubes were burnt in the burner to simulate the pollutant gas. The device???s ability to remove smoke particles is found to be highly effective, above 90 percent, based on tests on the diving dissolve chamber alone of the smoke emission control system. Filter paper was used to capture the residue smoke particles carried by the cooled exhaust gas and a membrane filter for the water suspending the particles. The existing system must be coupled with a feasible water treatment technology for it to be validated as fully functional, besides the design modifications suggested for the rotating gas sparger. The machine???s effectiveness in operation has been captured on video and Ir. Yong is confident his invention can be commercialized immediately.

Molecular Characterization of Hybrid Groupers of Sabah, Malaysia

The rapidly growing aquaculture industry with an estimated value of over US$51 billion contributes significantly to total global fisheries production. Malaysia ranks fourth in Grouper production globally and there exists a significant potential for the development of this important fishery resource, considering the fact that the maritime territorial waters of Malaysia host a range of genetically diverse Grouper species. One of the major bottlenecks associated with the development of aquaculture in the country is the non-availability of high quality brood stock, with the requisite characteristics suited for aquaculture. In order to address this problem, the Borneo Marine Research Institute has developed four grouper hybrids based on four parental genotypes. The proposed study aims to characterise the four parental genotypes which are Epinephelus lanceolatis, Epinephelus coioides, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus and Cromileptes altivelis by constructing small insert genomic libraries for each species, followed by the elucidation of Mendelian inheritance patterns in the four hybrid genotypes developed using the four parental genotypes (Box 1.0). This will be the first study of its kind in Malaysia and will result in the development of approximately 400 to 600 molecular markers which will be deployed to characterise the population structure of the hybrid genotypes in terms of population genetic parameters such as allelic diversity, population structure cross-amplification of genomic loci, and the linkage of quantitative phenotypic traits to molecular markers. The results of this study will (i) facilitate the understanding of the process of genetic recombination in hybrids at a genomic level (ii) be of relevance to the selection of brood stock and juveniles with a high level of genetic fitness on the basis of data derived using molecular markers, and (iii) assist in the DNA fingerprinting and population diversity analysis of wild grouper populations. The data generated by the proposed study will have a significant impact on the fundamental understanding of the molecular genetic processes involved in the mechanism of hybridization and its effects on phenotypic characteristics (Box 2.0). The study will also facilitate the management of the brooder germplasm through the process of marker-assisted selection on the basis of genetic diversity, this will further translate into economic gains, as the fry selected for stocking will exhibit a higher growth rate and lower susceptibility to stress and diseases. In terms of achieving national food security, the study will provide Malaysian researchers with access to a database of molecular markers for application n current and future breeding programs.

Optimal field production of oil palm in Malaysia and other countries of south East Asia are hampered by the presence of devastating Basal Stem Rot (BSR) disease caused by Ganoderma boninense. Oil palm has an economic life span of 25-30 years. BSR can kill more than 80 percent of stands by the time they are half-way through normal economic life. For more than 40 years, G. boninense continue to be a serious problem in some areas in Malaysia and Indonesia. Unfortunately application proven to be up to date, there is no single application reliable in suppressing or controlling the disease severity. Our research group in School of Sustainable Agriculture of Universiti Malaysia Sabah has found three important phenolic from oil palm root which was not reported before in oil palm that play a role in mechanism of resistance of oil palm to G. boninense. With the continuous effort and innovation, we come out with the right combination to manage G. boninense effectively.

Inclusion of Disabled People in the Sabah Workforce: An Investigation of Potential Factors

Paid work is of importance to everyone, including the disabled. It provides us the opportunity to earn an income, forge social relationships, and establish social and political status (Jameson, 2005). Conversely, unemployment or poor wages can result in poverty that may in turn restrict social and leisure pursuits (Jongbloed & Critchton, 1990). In the west, research (e.g., Graffam, Shinkfield, Smith & Polzin, 2002; HaYes & Macan, 1997; Kilbury, Benshoff & Rubin, 1992) has been conducted to investigate the factors that can influence the inclusion of disabled people in the workforce. However, research of this nature is lamentably still scarce in Malaysia. The lact of up-to-date statistical information on the disable population in our country can hamper our understanding of labor market activity relating to this population and development of effective policies to support disabled people in employment. Against this background, this study aims to contribute to the body of knowledge by investigating factors that may influence the inclusion of disabled people in Sabah workforce. The factors of interest include Malaysias recently passed Persons with Disabilities Act 2008, personal attributes (i.e., attributes of disabled people, and attributes of non-disabled people), and organizational context (i.e., job nature and organizational culture). Data will be obtained from a sample of employers via interviews and survey/s. The findings have significant implications for policy makers, employers and disabled workers with regard to the useful statistical data on the factors that can promote the inclusion of disabled people in the Sabah workforce specifically and in Malaysian workforce generally.

Improvement of Cold Water-Soluble Sago Starch

Cold water-soluble starch is a modified starch that can dissolve in cold water to form dispersion or paste without cooking. It is always used as a thickening or gelling agent in instant convenience foods which require short cooking/preparation time, to fulfil the busy lifestyle needs. This study focused on the preparation of instant starch using alcoholic-alkaline treatment. This treatment is concerned with a process wherein granules of starch are treated with alcohol and strong base to cause swelling of the granules and conversion to a form having increased cold water solubility. The uniqueness of this instant starch lies in the high intact granularity that contributes to desirable eating quality in the final products, such as high viscosity, smoother mouthfeel and texture, and hence high glossiness. This project was started by optimization of process parameters for alcoholic-alkaline treatment of sago starch using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Results obtained indicated high amount of NaOH use in the treatment greatly improved the cold water solubility, yet it also led to rupture of starch granules (that could potentially reduce the desirable eating quality). Only 52.2 +-1.5% of cold water solubility could be achieved in order to retain the granularity of sago starch. It was then followed by attempts to improve the granularity of the sample by combining the alcoholic-alkaline treatment with different types of chemical modifications. RSM was used to investigate the effect of various process variables and their interaction on the responses studied. The modified GCWS sago starches were assessed in terms of their physicochemical properties and performance (quality) as instant starch. Our findings indicated that the cold water solubility of modified GCWS sago starch was successfully increased to >60% or >80% (with intact granularity) depending on the type of combined treatment used. This study has shown that optimum degree of chemical modification could enhance the starch granular strength to withstand alkaline hydrolysis and processing condition during alcoholic-alkaline treatment. In brief, all treatments share the fact that NaOH was the most important variable affecting the responses studied. Modified GCWS sago starch produced could be used as instant thickener in instant cocoa filling and topping premix for bakery and confectionary products. Nevertheless, this instant starch exhibited short texture and was not suitable to be used as gelling agent. In comparison to GCWS sago starch produced by alcoholic-alkaline treatment the functionalities (pasting and thermal behaviour) of instant starch produced were found different due to the structural alteration that took place in the starch granules. Further studies which look into the structural-functionality of modified GCWS sago starch, such as rtheological research (including texturizing properties) and investigations into molecular weight distribution and particle size distribution, may provide a better understanding of potential niche are applications, particularly in low calorie food industries.

Higher Education and Social Cohesion: A Study of Sabah and Sarawak

Social cohesion is a societal condition that needs a continuous effort and practical approach to achieve. The fact that it has always been a concern for all in multicultural Malaysia has helped ascertain the aims of this research, which are to investigate the strength of social cohesion among undergraduates in Sabah and Sarawak, to understand how higher education contributes to promoting and preventing social cohesion, and consequently, to facilitate the formulation and implementation of unity programme policies in institutions of higher learning (IHLs). This study has found that social cohesion is closely correlated with curriculum and moderately correlated with co-curriculum, extra-curriculum and residential activities. As for compulsory courses offered in IHLs such as Ethnic Relations, Islamic and Asia Civilisation, Languages, and Basic Entrepreneurship, the results from this research has ruled out the Ethnic Relations Module as the course which is most important in strengthening social cohesion in IHL. It has also found that mastering the English Language is vital in view of globalization, and that the use of English as the medium of instruction does not undermine efforts towards the strengthening of social cohesion among Malaysians in IHLs. Outcome from the research is recommended in the policy implications for the ministry and universities. Policy implications for the ministry are in the development and improvement of curriculum, particularly on issues which involve social cohesion, in co-curricular and student activities, bridging the divide between science and non-science students and recognising the importance of the English language to facilitate national goal of transforming Malaysia into a regional hub of excellence in higher education. Meanwhile, policy implications to universities are, among others, to encourage oral communication in classes, incorporate cultural exchanges into course content, organise cultural festivities, and provide subsidies for guest students with host families.

Hepatoprotective Mechanisms of Selected Herbal Plants Native to Sabah, Malaysia

Liver diseases are considered as one of the most serious health problems given that liver is a major and important organ which is responsible for detoxification and deposition of endogenous and exogenous substances. Steroids, vaccines and antiviral drugs, which have been employed as a therapy for liver diseases, have potential adverse effects especially when administered for long terms. Therefore, it is essential to search novel agents that are efficient and have minimum side effects. Hence, hepatoprotective drugs from plant sources seem to be attractive alternatives. Herbal plants, such as Momordica charantia, Parkia speciosa; Homalanthus species, Andrographis paniculata, Cymbopogon citrates, Orthosiphon stamineus, Strobilanthes crispus, Merremia bornensis, Lonicera Japonica, Centella asiatica, Hoya coranaria and Eleusine indica, which are used as medicinal plants by local ethnic communities in Sabah, were selected for an evaluation of their antioxidant and hepatoprotectibe properties as well as their possible mechanism (s) of action.

Genetic Diversity of Sabah Traditional Rice

Rica, Oryza sativa L. is one of the staple foods for more than half of the world population. It is planted all over the world, including Malaysia except Antartica and Artic. According to a previous report by Garris et al. (2005), rice has been domesticated since 5-10000 years ago, a similar time for wheat and maize. Rice is predominantly autogamous and, therefore, gene flow is restricted. As a result, geographically or ecologically distinct groups of rice are expected to show greater genetic differentiation than would be the case in an outcrossing species. A substantial proportion of genetic diversity is reported to be residing between homozygous lines within a landrace or traditional rice cultivars. The traditional cultivars are also reported to have several important agronomical traits which are useful for modern rice breeding. Such traits are tolerance to abiotic stresses (i.e. salt, drought, climate and iron deficiency), and resistance to diseases and pests (i.e blast, bacterial blight, planthoppers and tungro). To date, there have been more than 500 accessions of Sabah traditional rice recorded at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), Agricultural Research Centre (ARC) under Sabah Agriculture Department and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). However, details of the genetic information on important agronomical traits are not available on these varieties. A systematic planning and strategy to explore the useful genes residing within the Sabah traditional rice germplasm are needed. This effort is probably beneficial for future rice improvement programmes in Sabah.
