Sistem Maklumat Inventori

Sistem Maklumat Inventori (SISMAI) telah dibangunkan pada
tahun 2004 oleh Institut Penyelidikan Perikanan Malaysia (FRI) bagi merekod maklumat aset yang terdapat di FRI, Batu Maung, Pulau Pinang. Sistem ini mampu untuk menyimpan rekod serta mempunyai kemudahan penyediaan laporan aset. Sistem ini
dibangunkan dengan menggunakan platform Microsoft Access versi 2002. Maklumat yang direkodkan adalah butiran perolehan aset, penempatan, penyelenggaraan, pelupusan, serta pemeriksaan yang terdapat dalam kad aset Kew. 312. Sistem ini menyediakan kemudahan carian melalui pilihan nombor siri, item, kategori aset serta nama pegawai. Catatan berkaitan pembaikan peralatan dapat direkodkan dengan baik bagi membantu proses pertimbangan pelupusan kelak. Menggunakan kaedah ini dapat menjimatkan tempoh masa carian, pengumpulan maklumat serta menjimatkan ruang penyimpanan fail secara fizikal. Laporan-laporan berkaitan aset seperti jumlah aset dan kos dapat dihasilkan dalam tempoh yang singkat memandangkan sistem ini mempunyai kemudahan untuk penyediaan maklumat tersebut. FRI telah berjaya merekod semua aset ke dalam sistem ini bagi membantu kerja-kerja penyelenggaraan aset.

Fish Profile Information System

Fish Profile Information Sistem merupakan pangkalan data yang
telah dibangunkan oleh Institut Penyelidikan Perikanan, Batu Maung, Pulau Pinang pada tahun 2005. Sistem ini dibangunkan bagi tujuan mengenalpasti spesies ikan memandangkan kekurangan pakar taksonomi dan buku-buku rujukan untuk proses identifikasi. Sistem ini merupakan pangkalan data yang dibangunkan bagi menyimpan maklumat ikan marin, air tawar dan udang di Malaysia. Maklumat spesies ikan yang terdapat di dalam sistem ini fokus kepada ciri-ciri penting idenfikasi secara bergambar bagi memudahkan kerja-kerja identifikasi. Terdapat juga kemudahan carian spesies ikan melalui
bentuk ekor dan badan. Kemudahan ini dapat menjimatkan masa
carian bagi mengenalpasti spesies ikan serta dapat mengatasi
masalah kesilapan identifikasi. Spesies-spesies ikan yang terdapat di dalam pangkalan data ini kumpul melalui pendaratan ikan di pangkalan serta pemancing. Gambar-gambar yang diambil diproses untuk tujuan pengecaman sebelum dimasukan ke dalam pangkalan data. Laporan-laporan juga disediakan untuk kemudahan penyediaan laporan yang diperlukan dalam tempoh masa yang singkat. Sistem ini boleh diakses melalui laman web Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia di www.dof.gov.my di bawah Bahagian Penyelidikan.

Sistem e-Library IPP disasarkan untuk memperbaiki kelemahan pada
sistem tradisional yang digunakan sekarang. Beberapa ciri baru untuk
pihak pentadbir sistem dan pengguna telah diperkenalkan, seperti
berikut:

dan mengeluarkan notis pemulangan secara automatik

samping membekalkan informasi material yang ada.

menyimpannya sebagai salinan fail (soft-copy).

hasil kerja mereka dalam format salinan fail ke dalam arkib
perpustakaan.
Berdasarkan ciri inovasi yang dinyatakan di atas, sistem e-Library akan dibahagikan kepada dua komponen utama:
1. Perpustakaan digital : Akses secara online
: Pembelajaran secara kendiri
: Memaparkan informasi pada skrin PC
pengguna
2. Perpustakaan fizikal : Material yang tidak boleh didapati dalam
bentuk salinan fail
: Memaksimakan penggunaan bahan
bercetak
: Akses kepada material, Internet dan CD

Sistem ini dibangunkan bagi memenuhi keperluan yang digariskan
oleh pihak pengurusan IPP, seperti berikut:

menggunakan teknologi rangkaian.

Applikasi e-Library ini menggunakan pendekatan berpandukan menu bagi membolehkan pengguna mengakses informasi di dalamnya dengan mudah dan berkesan.

Pumice-Buoy: An Innovative, Rocky Product of Floating Devices

Pumice-Buoy (from the words of pumice and buoy) is for the first time exposed as a novel and innovative product of floating devices and buoy products. It is made of pumice, a volcanic igneous rock which forms when magma with extremely high levels of water and gases is violently ejected from a volcano (in an explosive eruption), cools and depressurizes quickly and simultaneously above the ground. Pumice is typically light colored, composed of volcanic glass, may or may not contain crystals, and commonly originated from high-silica (felsic) to intermediate magmas. It commonly has vesicular or foamy (porous) texture and very low density, so it is enough for it to become the only rock that can float in water. This rock is cut and shaped to become some products, such as surfing boards and lifebuoys. Different from other types of the same kind products that are mostly made of heavy materials, such as plastic (polyethylene), rubber and fibreglass, Pumice-Buoy are lighter, stronger, more buoyant, more durable, resistant, friendly to users and environmental as well as unique in appearance. Potential markets and customers of these products among others are sport and safety equipments traders and marine transportation (such as ship and ferry) companies. People can use pumice-based surfing boards personally for surfing activity and pumice-based lifebuoys for swimming especially for babies and kids.

Eco-Friendly Machines for Enhancing Durability and Colour Appearance of Wood

The eco-friendly machines were designed for enhancing durability and improving the colour appearance of wood especially those from the planted species. The process also increases the wood dimensional stability. The process make used of a stainless steel tank with oil palm as the heating medium. The heat were generated by an electrical current. The temperature and treatment duration were monitored by a control panel placed outside the tank. Depending on the wood species and condition (mature and immature), the temperature applied were 1400C, 1800C and 2200C with exposure duration of 1, 2 and 3 hours respectively. The results of the investigations show that the heat treated wood retained most of their original physical and strength properties after undergoing the heat treatment. The colour especially the sap wood improved tremendously. The wood can be dried to an MC of 6-7% within 2 to 3 hours of treatment. The basic densities of bamboo were found to improve slightly by the heat application. The overall strengths properties of the heat treated bamboo were found to decrease slightly. The modulus of elasticity in the bending strengths were reduced between 2-33% in the green and 6-9% in the air-dried conditions. For the modulus of rupture in the bending strengths, the value were reduced between 1-23% in green and 4-16% in air-dried conditions. The compression strengths were reduced in the ranged between 2-3% ingreen and 2-35% in air-dried conditions. The shear strengths were reduced in the ranged between 16-24% and 12-24% in green and air-dried conditions respectively. The cultivated wood of Tectona grandlis, Acacia hybrid and Neolamarckia cadamba were used in this study. Within a week after harvesting, the wood were sawn and cut into various sizes, dried to 14% MC and underwent the heat treatment process, and for the subsequent investigations. Two sets of samples were investigated. The first set consist sap wood and second set consisted of heart wood. The heat treatment on the bamboo were done using an electrical heat treatment machine which was made as a prototype model. Palm oil was used as the heating medium as it is organic in nature, readily available and has high boiling point. The palm oil was first heated up to a temperature of 800C. Then the wood samples were submerged in the heated oil by placing them in a metal cage. The samples were taken out at 1400C, 1800C and 2200C interval after 30, 60 and 90 min. of immersion. A control panel was used in controlling the temperature and the duration of the process. A procedure developed by Razak et al. was adopted in this study with modification to suit for bamboo. All tests on the physical, mechanical & durability studies on these samples were conducted in accordance with ASTM, ISO & EN standards.
