TCP-Like TW : An Innovative Congestion Control Mechanism for Datagram Congestion Control Protocol

TCP-Like Threshold Window (TCP-like TW) is a new congestion control mechanism for Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP) over long delay link network, and it is designed to ease the problem in DCCP, such as longer time taken for achieving maximum throughput, and throughput fluctuation during congestion avoidance phase, that can degrade the network performance. As TCP-like TW is based on the TCP-like, one of the congestion control mechanism for DCCP, it is for the transmission of abruptly changes and bursty streaming multimedia data traffic over the network. However, TCP-like causes problems when delivering multimedia data over long delay link. Two approaches have been used for TCP-like TW, i.e. setting of appropriate slow-start threshold size and congestion window manipulation during congestion avoidance phase. It has been developed and implemented in Network Simulator 2 (ns-2) and has proven to enhance the performance of DCCP when delivering multimedia data over long delay link networks, as well as over short delay. For long delay link, TCP-like TW congestion control algorithm is able to minimize the time taken to archive maximum throughput and can smooth the fluctuate throughput after achieving the maximum throughput, whereas for short delay link, the maximum throughput will increase while maintaining the friendliness towards other congestion-controlled protocols.

Student's Mobile Information Prototype (SMIP) was developed to facilitate the administrative learning services for students anywhere and anytime. SMIP provides eight main services which include 1)course announcement, 2)exam result, 3)instructor profile, 4)course registration, 5)financial statement, 6)calender, 7)student profile, and 8)library loan services. The limitations of mobile phones and communication were considered when designing the SMIP. the information to be displayed has to be minimized and the navigation hyperlinks were anchored at the bottom of each page to meet the small screen of mobile phones. It also enhances the sales and purchases of second-hand items procedure and thus makes the procedure become easier and more flexible. Besides that, the development of SeconDies will also has the followings advantages:

4) To offer an alternatives way to sell and purchase of items from anywhere and anytime

SeconDies enables the sellers to upload the items that they want to sell and the buyers can view the items and bid the price over the Internet. The buyer with the higher bid price can get the item. Then, after the agreement of the item is made, SeconDies will automatically e-mial the formation of buyers to the sellers and the buyers will contact him/her for the transaction. Meanwhile, the buyers also can look for the desired items and if the item is not available yet, they can make a request of the item. After that, SeconDies will e-mail the interested buyer once the item is already available in the system. It is hoped that SeconDies will provide a better platform in managing second hand itms.

Scaleable RTT Estimation Technique For Layered Multicast Communication

Layered Multicast Protocol (LMP) supports efficient data transmission for continuous multimedia applications over the best-effort Internet. LMP allow users with different network capacities to achieve different reception rates and therefore users of different network bandwidth abble to perceive different multimedia qualities. This is particularly beneficial for multimedia data delivery in a huge and heterogeneous network such the Internet. TCP-equation model is the mechanism commonly used to control congestion in TCP-compatible layered multicast protocols. It has been adopted in many non TCP protocols as it enables the protocols to control congestion and at the same time being friendly towards TCP flows, which is the dominant traffic in the Internet. Basically, a TCP equation models the steady state of TCP throughput with the functions of packet size, loss event rate (LER), round trip time and retransmission timeout. Parameters of TCP equation model can be easily acquired from the network, however RTT estimation poses implosion problem at the sender in particular when the number of receivers is very large. With this invention, we proposed a novel technique for scalable RTT estimation for layered multicast protocol. The technique enables RTT estimation at LMP receivers is very large. Moreover this technique is easy to be implemented in the current Internet and only requires simple adjustment of the current setting. It is our hope with this invention, scaleable real-time and high quality mass multimedia content delivery over the Internet is possible in the future.

ReD-VRs: Web3D Solution To Assist Restorative Dentistry Learning And Training

This research shows the potential use of Web3D (web-based Virtual Reality) to produce an interactive-simulation for the Class 1 procedures for cavity preparations of restorative dentistry. Analysis showed that Class 1 cavity preparations necessitate a range of motor, perceptual and cognitive skills. The objective is to produce a reliable learning material that imitates the actual procedures of the cavity preparation within the limit of the technology being used. This project is seen as having the potential to add new dimension and offers vast possibilities to improve not only the teaching methods but also diagnosis and the treatment planning processes.

One of the many innovations in dental education is the use of information technology, including informatics and operatory simulations, to enrich student learning. The commercial solution for dental VR are beginning to appear but the acceptance is still in the early stage. Despite the expensive and non-portable use of available VR systems, Web3D hase the potential to provide a cheap with wide availability solution. The Electronically-based Interactive Learning Programmes report for the Global Congress on Dental Education (DentalEdEvolves) stated that currently there is a transition in dental education whereby didactic teaching is using supplement and replaced by a learner centred approach. Predicting Contraceptive Method Choice

The use of contraceptive method plays a critical role as one of the family planning programs. As the critical role of contraceptive method choice in family planning program becomes axiomatic, there is a necessity to predict the contraceptive method choices that are grouped as short term, long-term or no usage of any contraceptive method. Factors that contribute to the choice of the contraceptive method are investigated and important contributing factors are included om predict model. The predictive model is then embedded into an intelligent web-based system known as CMC Predictor. CMC Predictor is a flexible tool in such a way that it allow expert to generate prediction model and also allow public to apply the generated predictive model for forecasting the contraceptive method choice.

The CMC Predictor System Employs Neural Network in determining the association between the user's demographic and socio-economic background with the contraceptive method choice. The system integrates various technologies and techniques such web-based development environment, multimedia technology and NN techniques. The integration is crucial in providing an effective and intelligent web-based environment that can be accessed globally using minimal hardware and software requirements CMC Predictor has been successfully tested by the medical officer and the public. To improve dissemination of knowledge, the system can also accessed through GPRS mobile phone.

CMC Predictor may help the public to plan their in type of contraceptive method is suitable to be used based on the duration of usage. From contraceptive industrial perspective, the result can be used as an indicator in producing a particular contraceptive product. PEKAMS: PEKA Management System For Assessment Of Science Skills

PEKA stands for Penilaian Kemahiran Amali, the Assessment of Science Skills. It is implemented in Malaysian secondary schools to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning of science, especially Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics subjects. Since there is currently no PEKA Management System, although a computer system is urgently required, no such system is available.

Managing PEKA manually indeed poses many problems. The scores are recorded in the Individual Score Form and then are transferred to the Main Score Form based on the respective classes. At the end of Form Five, the best grades scored by the students are sent to Malaysian Examination Board and certificates will be produced. Formative continuous assessment is carried out in two year time and it involves at least 20 experiments of each subjects taught. Usually, marks or grades obtained in Form 5 are taken into consideration even though students scored better grades while they were in Form 4. This is due to the fact that most of the data are not updated. Furthermore, errors and mistakes such as misplaced student's lists, typing errors, incomplete information and unreadable data are common in manual system. This will result in entry problems specially data concerning the students' names (the spelling) and the correct grades obtained because the teachers have to follow the rubrics closely when converting the marks to grades. Finally, teachers keep students' PEKA records on paper and ring files for two years until after their SPM result are released by the Ministry of Education. However, there is high possibility for the records kept in these files to be lost and damaged especially when utilized by many users. Other than that, the transfer of the students from one school to another also results in loss of data.

A prototype was developed to present the result of the analysis process that consists of a centralised database system that was used to maintain the online PEKA Management System (PEKAMS). The database was built by using Microsoft Access 2000. The web pages were developed by using JSP, HTML and Dreamweaver MX. The information from the database built was connected through Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) and retrieved by using Tomcat Server.

Online Practicum Student Placement (OPSP) is a product of a research project which was carried out based on the need to improve the current practice of placing practicum students to various organization all over Malaysia. This secured Web-based system allows the student placement process to be performed electronically, efficiently and economically. Its implementation helps the Practicum Centre (PPR), a centre in charge of managing the UUM practicum programme, in terms of reducing the tedious and time-consuming student placement and matching processes. OPSP can now be used by the industry to provide or update company profile, specify the number of students required according to academic programmes, determine the specific criteria for the required students, view a list of students (including their resume) based on the specific criteria, select the required students, and finally provide the confirmation of the selection. In addition, OPSP allows PPR to monitor the replacement process as well as receive feedback and placement confirmation via emails. This system was tested successfully with the potentials users and will be implemented fully by the middle of 2007

Office Conferencing System Using Voice Over IP (VoIP)

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that allows person to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. Some VoIP services may only allow a person call other people using the same including local, long distance, mobile and international numbers. While some VoIP services only work over a computer or a special VoIP phone, other services allow person to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter. VoIP represents the next generation in communication services. By moving voice services to the data network, we eliminate a separate voice infrastructure and dramatically reduce the cost of telephone moves, adds and changes. Placing voice calls over the data network will require equipment upgrades to support time sensitive application such as voice. The advantages of selecting IP telephony include providing for accommodation of long-range developments in networking and telephony services and products, potentially lowering certain personnel and infrastructure costs over time. This aim of this project is explore using VOIP (Voice over IP) with mobile hosts and networks. VoIP is becoming very popular all over the world and research into new ways are currently happening. VOIP is normally used over fixed network connection but that it is not always practical to have a fixed network in all places. The project is looking into keeping communication in this type of environment available by the use of VOIP over mobile networks using technologies such as WI-FI. Issues such as keeping calls open if connectivity becomes low or is lost all together and the quality of audio available depending upon the available data rate will be addressed.

New Congestion Management Mechanism For Next Generation Routers

In TCP-based networks, packet losses are used to indicate congestion. When the queue at a gateway is overflowed, packets are dropped. The TCP source infers the presence of congestion in the network when detecting dropped packets either from the receipt of three duplicate acknowledgments (ACKs) or after the timeout of a retransmit timer, and responds to a dropped packet by reducing the congestion window. Sender flow control is achieved with TCP conventionally injecting packets into network based on feedback of congestion state of the network. Dropping packets only happen when the queue overflows and having TCP react only to such losses result in significant transfer delay as a consequence of the packet retransmission. Unnecessarily, many packet losses and unfairness occur due to synchronization effects.

In this work, we propose that sending congestion signal as soon as possible can be of great benefit to the TCP connection, avoiding the severe plenty of a retransmit timeout for a connection has not yet started placing load on the network or for a data packet. We built our mechanism to send congestion signal faster so that the sender cam reduce its congestion window sooner.

Among others, our mechanism includes:
1) Creating queue and assign packets to those queue depend on the packet priority
2) Prioritizing for different traffic such as delay sensitive, interactive transaction-based application (likes desktop video conferencing) and all traffic which has higher priority that the rest and
3) Mixing different queuing methods to guarantee sending the higher priority traffic faster and guarantee fairness and treatment for the rest of traffic.

We have tested our mechanism on the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) packets which normally has higher priority. ECN is a method for informing the sender about the network congestion. ECN activation on gateways marks packets instead of dropping them thus lead a faster congestion signal propagation and good network utilizaiton. We have obtained good results in term of faster congestion signal propagation and good network utilization.

Our mechanism can be incorporated in the design of the new internet routers. Alternatively, the mechanism can readily be patched can be readily be patched into the current router software.
