Tomato Leaves: A Novel Source of Anti-Inflammatory

In this study, the pharmacologic effects of Solanum lycopersicum leaves extract were investigated by observing the Nitric Oxide (NO) production. The inflammatory activity of LPS-stimulated murine macrophage cells RAW264.7 treated with different concentration of tomato leaves extract (0, 20, 50 and 100g/ml) were monitored by Griess assay. Results showed that the tomato leaves extract inhibited the productions of NO which plays a central role in the anti-inflammatory response. At the highest concentration (100g/ml) of the tomato leaves extract tested, the NO production was inhibited by 84.95%. The results were further investigated by observing the Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level. The results agreed with the previous observation when at the highest concentration (100g/ml) of tomato leaves extract tested, the PGE2 production was reduced by 37.41% compared to the untreated, indicating anti-inflammatory activity.

Projek Kajian Nasional Hak Reprokduktif, Kesihatan Seksual dan Reprokduktif Wanita di Malaysia bertujuan untuk mengumpul data komprehensif berkaitan kesihatan seksual dan reprokduktif dalam kalangan wanita di negara ini. Responden dalam kajian terdiri daripada 2 kumpulan wanita, iaitu responden belia berumur 15 hingga 24 tahun dan responden dewasa berumur 25 hingga 59 yang dipilih dengan menggunakan kaedah persampelan berbilang peringkat di sembilan buah negeri di Semenanjung Malaysia. Data dikumpulkan melalui temubual peribadi dengan menggunakan borang soal selidik terstruktur yang merangkumi isu kesihatan seksual dan reproduktif wanita termasuk kehamilan, perancangan keluarga, HIV/AIDS,perkhidmatan kesihatan,keganasan rumahtangga dan hak reprokduktif. Data tambahan dikumpul melalui kajian kualitatif menggunakan pendekatan perbincangan fokus yang melibatkan 50 responden lelaki. Analisis data kuantitatif berdasarkan 2005 sampel responden belia dan 2000 responden dewasa. Sampel dipilih menggunakan kaedah persampelan berbilang peringkat, mengikut pecahan strata bandar (63%) dan luar bandar (37%), meliputi sembilan buah negeri isitu Kedah,Pulau Pinang,Kelantan,Pahang, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan dan Johor.

Effective Learning Of Quranic Verse Recitation Using Automated Tajweed Checking Rules Educational Tools

An automated speech recognition engine for Quranic verse recitation with Tajweed checkin rules capabilities has been developed, due to support the existing and manual method of talaqqi and musyafahah method in Quranic learning process. This method can be described as face to face learning process between students (Recitors) and teachers (Mudarris), where the process of listening, correction and repetition of the correct al-Quran recitation took place in the real time condition. But, this method is believed become less effective and unattractive to be implemented, especially towards the young Muslim generation who are more attracted to the latest technology. Automated system with tajweed checking rules capabilities could be another alternative due to support the existing method of the manual skills of Quranic learning process, without denying the main role of Mudarris in teaching al-Quran. The system is implemented using the programming using the programming language of MATLAB. This implementation is easy to use and can easily extended with new features. In this project, an automated Tajweed checking rules engine for Quranic verse recitation was develop and tested, due to present the easiest way to muslim to recite and learn al-Quran, with better understanding of Tajweed. This tool was developed using Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) algorithm for feature extraction technique and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) classification for recognition part. Feature extraction is crucial to prepare data for classification process and MFCC is one of the most popular feature extraction techniques used I speech recognition. Besides, HMM algorithm also plays a crucial role in speech recognition system transitions and observations map into speech recognition task.

This study adopted the quantitative and qualitative methods. The instruments used were: Science Cognitive Test, Mathematics Cognitive Test, Students "Psychological Characteristics Scale, Students " Socio-Economic Scale and Interview Protocol. The data collection had permitted the researcher to observe perceptions,plans,actions and implications (progress and problems) from the participants" perspectives. Quantitative data analysis utilizing descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation was recorded while qualitative data was analyzed by transcribing interview and observational data as well as observing the common pattern and the emerging of themes from the data.

MyG-Mung BeanTM-New and Highly Nutritious Tempeh

Improvement of nutritional quality and functionality of food products have always gained global interest. Fermentation is one of the tools traditionally used to enhance the nutritional value and preservation of various food products. A new generation of highly nutritious tempeh was successfully produced using mung bean as a starting material.. My G-Mung BeanTM tempeh was found to contain high gamma aminobutryic acid (GABA) and has multi-functional health benefits. The composition produced after fermentation of mung beans using selected Rhizopus 5351 strain of MARDI was found to have high antioxidant activity, anti-diabetic, anti-pigmentation, anti-stress and liver protective effects. It vitro study showed that the composition produced by the method also has immune-stimulatory effects on proliferation of immune cells and cytotoxic effects on human cancerous cells. The solubel phenolic acids profile showed that the amount of protocatechuic acid in My G-Mung BeanTM tempeh was 13 times higher than soybean tempeh indicating the potential use of this new generation tempeh as food for liver protection and cancer prevention.

MR 269: New High Yielding Rice Variety for Blast Disease Resistance

MR 269 was derived from crosses of variety P 347 and advance rice line Y1362. Crosses of P 347 and Y 1362 was carried out in MS 2000/2001 followed with bulk and pedigree selection, family selection and fixation and subsequently evaluation in preliminary Yield Trial (PYT) and Advance Yield Yrial (AYT). The selected promising line was then promoted to multi location trial (MLT) in MS 2009 until MS 2010/2011. The line was further evaluated in local verification trial (LVT) in MS 2010/2011. The desirable traits of MR 269 are early maturation and same plant height with MR 219 with higher percentage of filled grain. MR 269 also showed better resistance to leaf blast and panicle blast compared to MR 219. Head rice recovery of MR 269 (73%) is equivalent to MR 219 (72%) and has same category as long grain. The percentage if amylose contents also indicated that cooking quality of MR 269 (20.6%) is same to MR 219 (20.1%) which is soft rice texture. The average yield of MR 269 in MLT showed higher yield potential compared to MR 219 and is suitable to be planted in several environment.

MyFeed is a Windows based Feed Formulation System for Ruminants developed in Microsoft Basic language. It is user friendly computerized feed formulation software to balance nutrients in ruminant feeds to meet the specific nutritional requirements of livestock at the least cost. BLX6372: A New Local Watermelon Hybrid with High Yielding and Good Fruit Quality for Local Market

Four watermelon inbred lines were crossed in complete diallel mating scheme, followed by evaluation and screening of F1 hybrids in two locations over a period of two planting seasons for economically important traits. The result showed that hybrid BL-6372 had good specific combining ability (SCA) effects for most of the traits. This is the first Malaysian F1 watermelon hybrid which was produced by crossing between inbred lines BL and 6372. Considering overall performance, this hybrid might be recommended for commercial cultivation after stability and large scale testing have been done.

Animal Signature

The present invention relates to a method for identifying animal species in raw and processed conditions based on animal fats detection of TAG regioisomers. From the results, it is concluded that the meat products of different species (beef, pork, chicken and lamb) cooked by microwave, roasting, hotpot and currying are separated well in the PCA score plot. The present invention confirms that the discrimination of meat from different animal species is possible for both raw and processed meat products, and this is an entirely new observation for animal fat as previous methods are not able to separate isomers sufficiently.
