Visual Auditory Simulation Technique (VASTech)in Promoting On-Task Behavior of Children

Learning requires all learners to pay attention to what they are learning. It is therefore particularly important for learners to be on-task whenever learning tasks are performed (Omrod,2003). Young children with inattention problems will find difficulty in concentrating on a task, do not finish what they start, do not listen and always lose things (Lerner,2003).Children with special needs, especially those with Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are especially prone to lack of attention span and thus they are found to be off-task at most time during the process of learning. This study aims to develop a courseware using visual auditory simulation technique (VASTech) that incorporates multimedia flash to systematically foster the attention in promoting the on-task behaviour of normal (3 to 6 years chronological)and special children 7 to 12 years chronological). The system comprises 3 modules, namely, the beginner, the intermediate and the advance. The system development adopts the incremental approach to build learners" attention. Each module consists of 5 chapter. Each chapter differ from one to another in terms of the time frame needed to complete the chapter and its nature of complexity. Using the visual and auditory simulation technique, this system blends the multiple intelligences theory with the multi-sensory approach in the instructional design to form a holistic system to build the attention and to tap on the time taken by normal young children (3 to 6 years chronological) and special children (7 to 12 years chronological) in engaging the given tasks. Hence, this is a study that combines theory with relevant approach and to be conducted in an applied setting. This product is in the process of patenting.

The State of Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science in English

This is research that was conducted to examine the implementation of the policy of Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science in English (PPSMI). It explored teachers "self efficacy in executing PPSMI, investigated students" self confidence in learning the subjects in English, investigated the extent the training for teachers had helped teachers in implementing PPSMI, evaluated the suitability of the courseware, and identified the role played by the school principals and parents in making the implementation of PPSMI a success.
The research was conducted as a follow up to the Malaysian government decision to implement the policy of using English to teach Mathematics and Science (PPSMI) in January,2003. Since then, it had aroused positive and negative perceptions among the country leaders, academicians, as well as parents. However, there was not much research done to examine the implementation of this policy. Even though the Ministry of Education had provided various supports in the form of training of teachers and teaching and learning materials like computer software, not much research has been conducted to determine the effectiveness of these ventures.
This research tried to answer question that arise from the implementation of this policy. Among the questions it tried to answer: Do the support provided by the ministry of Education had succeeded in ensuring the success of the implementation of the policy? Are there any schools that can be considered as examples of the success in the implementation of this policy? What have they done to make this policy a success? What are the challenges faced by schools especially students and teachers in ensuring the success of this policy?
The research has resulted in four papers published in the proceedings of an International Conference in Brunei and a paper presented at a Forum in Melbourne, two monographs, four journal articles with one published in an international journal.

Chemistry Framework In Teaching

Chemistry is often associated with abstract and unimaginable information as it involves microscopic processes. However, the concepts of catalyst, inhibitor, co-factor and the "lock and key" theory form the basis of the teaching processes. The classroom teaching is a source of "whole class teaching" operating on a paradigm that " one size fits all". This becomes the root of selective learning, thereby accumulating sources of disjointed and mutated learning keys. The disjointed and mutated learning keys become an abstraction by itself, in addition to the abstraction of each learning key. This increases the complexity of learning and need to be addressed by adopting a customized " lock and key" concept in the teaching and learning process.Differentiated teaching pathways are enablers in facilitating the learning processes with democratization of education prevailing in the classroom. The chemistry concepts that depict the multiple and varied teaching pathway were used to steer the learning on a continuum for lifelong learning pursuit and endurance. In view of this, a potential chemistry framework for futuristic teaching has been designed. The framework explicitly outlines the chemistry concepts underpinning the teaching and learning processes. These are significant for the learners to cope with the multitude of inhibitors that prevail in the learning of specific content areas in the various disciplines.
