WUE is the amount of water required to produce a unit crop yield or dry matter. Physiologically, this can also be defined as the amount of carbohydrate produced through photosynthesis per unit water loss. Usually, there is a direct correlation between crop productivity and water use. When there is a reduction in the potential evaporation rate due to climatic conditions, there will also be a reduction in the CO2 uptake. Using WUE in oil palm selection has numerous benefits such as identify planting materials that need less water for productivity and WUE determination using gas exchange is rapid and non-destructive compared to other techniques.

SNP Markers for Genetic Studies and Prediction of Monogenic Traits in Oil Palm

SNPs represent the most frequent type of genetic polymorphisms, and provide an important source of molecular markers that are useful in genetic mapping (Angaji,2009), map-based positional cloning (Angaji,2009), the detection of marker-trait gene associations through linkage and linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping (Jehan and Lakhanpaul,2006), and the assesment of genetic relationships between individuals (Jehan and Lakhanpaul,2006; Hakim et al., 2010). SNPs are therefore useful for marker assisted selection, positional cloning and gene isolation. SNPs can also help the breeders select for high-yielding varieties with desirable characteristics, including resistance to pests and diseases, and tolerance to environmental stresses.

Sawing Scheme of Oil Palm Trunk for Reduced Sawn-lumber Distortions on Drying

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has developed a sawing scheme to cater for these OPT characteristics and processing options. This would produce a lower rate of
dimensional shrinkage during seasoning. The OPL scantlings showed a gradual change in lumber dimensions on drying. The expected changes in dimensional shrinkage of OPL scantlings for each respective sawing pattern could be identified. It was then possible to use these lumber shrink profiles to calculate the value of dimensional shrinkages of interest. Apart from moisture gradients (Salin, 1996), the variability of basic density and vascular bundles within the OPL scantlings (Kamarudin et al., 2011) contributed to collapse, particularly the lowerdensity of juvenile material in the pith zone. It is therefore possible to predict the quantity of usable OPL scantlings that would be available after seasoning.

Rapid Determination of Triacylglycerols Composition in Palm Oil Products bt Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Refractive Index Detector (UPLC-RID)

The rapid determination of TAG components in oils and fats by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Refractive Index Detector (UPLC-RID) is a relatively new technique requiring a very small sample quantity and minimal solvent usage. TAG separation by UPLC-RID applies the same principles as conventional reversed phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) where separation is performed on a column containing modified octadecylsilyl (C18) silica gel as the stationary phase but with smaller particle sizes and column dimensions. The time required for a single
injection is significantly shortened to less than 20 min compared to a run time of 120 min when using conventional RP-HPLC. This allows faster analysis, reduces energy consumption and increases throughput of samples. A considerable reduction in mobile phase usage allows cost
reduction in solvent purchases and less disposal of waste solvent, making this method health and environment-friendly.

The current sources for extraction of tocotrienols are
from agro-based industries including palm oil and rice bran oil. TRF preparations are available in the market, for example at 20%, 50% and 70% total vitamin E content, with a typical ratio of tocotrienols to tocopherols at 75:25. We propose a technology for increasing the content of tocotrienols to more than 80% and improving the ratio of tocotrienols to tocopherols to 90:10 or more.
