WLAN Indoor Location Identifier

This invention is an indoor location identification system that utilizes received signal strength (RSS) readings from wireless local area (WLAN) access points in fixed positions that are located strategically in an indoor environment. Each specific ponts in a map under the coverage of designated reference wireless accrss points corresponds to a unique RSS fingerprint vector. A mobile user collects RSS vectors as he/she travels from point to point in the area. The sample vector is then matchedd to the closest RSS fingerprint vector which is stored within a RSS fingerprint database.

Uniten's Examination Scheduling System

One of the main challenges of scheduling university examination is ensuring that the examinations are adequately spaced out to allow adequate time for preparation. Automated methods have been successful in generating high quality timetables and the system that we developed for Uniten uses a unique way of assigning the examination effectively. The algorithm is based on heuristics. It has been shown to provide much better results than the manually scheduled examination timetables. combining the algorithm with a simple hill-climbing approach produces even better results. The web-basead application uses Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft SQL Server.

Mitigating Human-Human Collaboration Problem using Software Agents

In human-centered collaboration, the issues of adhering to deadlines and the lack of enforcement in work schedules present major problems in collaborative work. The diversity of tasks imposed on humans and the procedures attached to them also pose a challenge in keeping time to remember and implement scheduled tasks. To address some of these problems, we use the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) agent communication language (ACL) to implement communicative language (ACL) to implement communicative interactions and subsequent collaboration between Software Agents.
Agents update and monitor their environments, by which they perform autonomous actions through a common set of ontology. An interface for each agent, as shown below, provides a convenient means for humans to delegate mundane tasks to software agents. The use of such interface and the subsequent interactions performed by agents and between agents contribute to the achievement of a shared goal.

The intelligent dynamic bandwidth allocator based fuzzy logic is used to allocate the upstream EPON bandwidth in the FFTH environment. It has one optical line terminal (OLT) that is connected to multiple optical network units (ONUs) that are equipped with a fuzzy logic bandwidth allocator. Using this scheme in EPON , the bandwidth is granted to each type of traffic as according to the requested bandwidth, thus leads to the less guard band. Energy Management Based on IEEE 802.15.4. Standard for Wireless Sensor Network

Minimizing energy consumption is criritcal for the success of wireless sensor networks because sensors often powered by batteries only. The energy management method for wireless sensor network is developed by utilizing IEEE 802.15.4 standard which focuses on low cost, low energy consumption and less complex commnunication. Local synchronization with periodic listen-sleep and adjusment of the adaptive duty cycle based on the trafic load are implemented on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol to further optimize the energy consumption of the sensors. In addition the method also maintains the quality of services (QoS) with significant improvement in the networks delay.

Emotions in Normative Environment using Software Agent Technology

We propose emotions as another component to the belief-desire-intention (BDI) agent architecture, which could enhance the reasoning process for agents to deliberate changes that occur in a normative framework. We postulate that emotions triggered in agents could influence the agents decisions on the appraisal process, which subsequently enhance their performance. We discuss how emotions are deliberated in an agents reasoning process that involves its beliefs, desires and intentions in time-constrained situations. This framework with optimization functions exhibits superior performance in time-constrained multiple goal situations when agents are able to achieve their normative goals while maintaining compliance with the norms. We validate these framework by simulating agents interactions in specific environments to compare the normative and emotional consequences arising out of there interactions. The simulation attempts to tease out agents decisions and behaviours as consequences of soft constraints imposed on the agent attributed by the framework. The simulation also attempts to investigate the contribution of emotion in a dynamic environment as another additional attribute to the existing framework that augments agents performance in a time-constrained with multiple-goal situation as attributed by the framework. With emotions-endowed agents in a dynamic environment, significant performance improvement is observed when emotions triggered in agents contribute to enhanced performance in a dynamic environment.

An Online Handwritten Word Recognition System for Bahasa Melayu Cheque Words

The invention is a handwriting recognition system "engine" (as opposed to a finished application) that can be used in any applications requiring handwriting recognition. It relies on database of collected words in Bahasa Melayu to perform the training or to teach the system to recognize Malays words. The words are at the moment limited to words that represents the legal amount on Malaysian cheques, ie: as numbers such as 'satu', 'dua', etc, connective such as 'dan', 'shj','sahaja' etc. Word recognizers for non Bahasa Melayu words are common but none is in the 'engine' being used for recognition. It relies on a new concept of hybriding the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) in the design.
