Restoring Malay Identity Through Experimental Typography

Before modern Roman alphabet was introduced, it is said Malay community has been using Jawi as medium of writing. Jawi is an adapted Arabic alphabet and it is widely practiced in Nusantara or Malay Archipelago (Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Southern Thailand and Southern Philippines). Unlike Arabic alphabet, Jawi script has extra letterforms, which are modified to represent certain vowels sounds that can only be found in Malay language. These letterforms are 'nga', 'ca','gaf','va' and 'nya'. Hence historian has regarded Jawi as the cultural heritage that symbolizes Malay sovereignty and civilizations. This study attempts to conduct formal analysis by looking at both roman and Jawi alphabets. Using vector design tool namely Adobe Illustrator, several exploratory design tasks were carried out. A method called Deconstruction and Reconstruction were used which involved three levels: 1) breaking the letterforms into smaller parts; 2) matching and combining the broken parts; 3) manipulating the parts to form a new style. The final output of this study is a multiple design of Jawi scripts.

E-INVES English-Interactive Vocabolary Enrichment Software

E-ENVES is an interactive multimedia vocabulary enrichment software designed for the KBSR Level 1. It is an interactive form of learning vocabulary by reinforcing words through visul aids especially students with little exposure to English language such as those in KBSR level 1. E-INVES is also in a form of picture dictionary. It contains 13 vocabulary items and each item contains of 10 universal and culturally based words. These selected words are nouns arranged in alphabetical order. The items are based on the curriculum specifications. This software also supplies various exercises and crossword puzzles after each item. The uniqueness of this software are: it provides students with spontaneous information in the form of visuals, it makes learning fun and interactive, it creates a positive learning environment and it widens vocabulary usage. Also, the students can-self assess themselves and get spontaneous feedback. As for teachers, this software can help them to provide students with an adequate vocabulary for both speaking and reading as students are expected to recognize and understand between 600 and 1,300 words in the target language. Classroom teaching alone could not help teachers to achieve and accomplish these goals. This software has the potential to be commercialized because it is a supplementary learning software in the form of interactive multimedia that can benefit the target users. It can also be purchased or subscribed to by the school management, the public or the students themselves.

An image-based 3600 panorama and turnorama (object
movie) ""browser"" had been developed for networked mobile
devices deployed in collaborative virtual environments
(CVEs). The browser, named ""IlVRP2C"" ('micro virtual
reality for you to see,' in which the prefix 'micro' suggests its small size), runs on Java-enabled (Japanese NTT
DoCoMo) mobile phones, especially 505i-, 505iS-
, and 506i-series units, which have enough memory for
storing data and also high-quality liquid-crystal displays
(LCDs) for vivid color images. It provides a novel solution
to limitations associated with interactive stereographic
display of panoramic and turnoramic imagery. The Sharp
SH505i mobile phone, which features an LCD panel switchable
between full resolution 2D mode and auto-stereoscopic (no eye wear needed) 3D mode, is used to present stereo graphic images. The stereograms can be captured by a special camera system and software. IlVR4U2C, through a servent (server/client hybrid) HTTP r-7 TCP/IPgatewaydevelopedwith JakartaTomcat, is also integrated with other clients in our multimodal groupware suite and interoperates seamlessly with them.

Iban & Melanau Word Processing Tool-Spell Checker

One of the key productivity (and learning) tools in writing is the spell-checker. In this research, the linguistics nature of the Sarawak languages was investigated, the findings leveraged and the Iban and Melanau Spelling Checker was implemented. This spell checker replaces the old spellings of Iban words with new spellings. The accuracy of spell checking is high as it performs the dictionary look-up together with the Morphological Analyser. POS (part-of-speech) tagger which is embedded inside the spell checker for Iban language has increased the accuracy of suggesting misspelled words for the candidates, from the most likely to the least likely.
