Wi3D Planning Tool

The Wi3D Planning Tool can be used by wireless designers to reduce the time consuming site surveys tasks, especially the multiple floors indoor enviroment, ans it is programmed to help designers to calculate the link budget, including the attenuation from the monitored live enviroment and from the planned simulation. Multi-objective optimization is applied for generating multiple results, such as the signal strenght or coverage, signal to noise ratio (SNR), data rate and overlapping channel interface. The complexity of the WLAN radio propagation from a multiple floor building can be visualized from the genarated contours with colors, which overlap between floors and create 3D when floors are properly aligned. Underwater Electric Propulsion

ROVs nad AUVs are intensively being used in the offshore oil and gas exploration and production, underwater pipeline monitoring and maintenance, surveillance nad rescue operation, military operation, marine and enviromental impact assessments, salvage operation and hydrographic survey. The electrical actuators provide several advantages in comparison with mechanically actuated systems. In this project, we have designed, developed and prototyped an electrically actuated thruster as a direct drive propulsion system based on a 3-phase permanent magnet brusless machine for underwater applications. The non-linear design and analysis of the permanents magnet brussless motor are entirely performed in propeller, thus providing a peak thrust of 25N for the underwater manoeurve. Critical maximum output torque and efficiency at 48Vdc battery supply. Other electromagnetic considerations such as maximum speed capability, maximum output torque and efficiency at 48Vdc battery supply. Other electromagnetic considerations such as cogging torque, slot numbers and pole numbers are also addressed. Half-effect sensors are embedded inside the motor structure in order for the motor to successfully operate in bldc mode. The optimized motor design has been prototyped and tested to work as direct drive propulsion system. The results obtained from the experiment conducted in laboratory in an open water testbed show satisfactory performance with a rated 15N continual bollard thrust at 1200rpm motor speed.

TORQ-P.com based on Cu-NbC conductor composite was fabricated from Cu-Nb-C powders using a new high pressure torsion process. A mixture of the Cu-Nb-C powders was placed in circular holder of 20mm diameter and 0.25mm depth at the lower anvil of the HPT facility. The mixture of powders was then compacted at am extreme high pressure of 5 GPa and simultaneously rotated under the imposed pressure of 5 GPa at a rotation speed of 0.5 rpm. No process control agents were used and the powders (and consolidated sample) were only in contact with the anvil at the sample surface. After 20 turns of HPT, in situ Cu-NbC composite was formed with full density and without any contamination. The Cu-NbC composite was annealed at 700 degree of Celsius for 1h. The best ever reported combination of electrical conductivity (68% IACS) and tensile strength (622 MPa) for such composites was obtained in a sample of composition Cu-1 vol% NbC.

Techniques for enhancing efficiency of cellular phone antenna

By choosing the second resonance frequency, the antenna gain is increased. This is effective for the frequency of 1.5 GHz to 2.5 Ghz. The bandwidth is enough for IMT2000 and the input impedance of 50 ohms. The advantages of the antenna are the design is simple, better gain compared to normal helical antenna and physically strong and flexible. A formula to relate the resonance frequency and the design parameters has been found. by having a reflector, the performance of the antenna is improved by 3 dB. The antenna radiation pattern can be deviated so that the beam is radiating forward and therefore less energy is heating the user`s head.

SUPER- K CCTO

Super-K CCTO is the newest electroceramic material with unusual dielectric properties ever found. CCTO means a ceramic compound, CaCu3 Ti4 O12 and Super-K was named after its shows a colossal dielectric constant with relative permittivity or K-value up to 12,000 (K-value of dry air is 1 and glass ~5). This permittivity value is much higher if compared to the conventional electroceramic materials such as BaTiO3 ~ 1,000, TiO2 ~ 100, SiO2 ~ 40 and remains relatively stable over a wide range temperature of 100 to 600 K(-173 to 327oC).
High-K materials are useful for capacitor (component which can store energy) and memory device (DRAM). The higher K-value, the more charge/energy can store, and we can make the smaller electronic devices by using Super ??? K CCTO. In microwave application, Super - K CCTO is very promising as a dielectric resonator to produce a smaller size of oscillator system for low microwave frequency ranges.

The demand for spiral wound membrane (SWM) module in water purification and industrial waste water treatment especially wafer fabrication and electroplating industry has been intensively increased in worldwide for the past decade. Current available SWM moduls in the market generally process life span between one to two years. To extent the SWM module life span, the most influencing factor is to design a novel spacer which is able to battle fouling phenomenon. Hence, novel type of SWM feed spacer was designed and fabricated to overcome fouling problem in the SWM. Current novel SWM spacer exhibts outstanding features in combating fouling and enhancing permeation flux. This novel spacer material been designed and fine-tuned by Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation, whihch further been tested and verified experimentally.

Based on received data, the control unit actives the selvomotors to rotate the airusff mod81 and the WIItrol surfaces.The motions are measured and sent back to the host computer via DAQ-system Inside the control unit to be compared with the calculated data of aircraft's attitude and 1 control surface defiection on computer.

Rocket engineering has become a niche area in the School Of Aerospace Engineering. Since early year 2000, a group of student successfully launched a 3 inch rocket at the old engineering campus in Tronoh,Perak. Preliminary tests were conducted on the prototype in the following year; however not until year 2003, a research grant was obtained to further the project. Under the grant "Design, test and fabricate of a small ballistic rocket" the research group which consist of one lecturer and five undergraduate student has begun work on the design of two stages six inch rocket. A simple motor is constructed and will undergo series of static tests to determine thrust envelop. Aerodynamic characterization of various shape configuration and proper nozzle design also carried out to enhance flight performance. A flight-path prediction software is also written to localize prediction the rocket's drop zones. Another research activity which concentrates to deployable fins is also carried out. Following these research activities, actual flight tests will be carried out for verification purposes. Silicon Nanowire Transistor with 33 nm Lateral Gate Gap

The transistor is the fundamental building block in all electronic devices. Since 1990s the number of transistors in a mircochip has grown to over five million transistors. Silicon nanowire transistor (SiNWT) is a new promosing component on the development of nanoelectronic devices. In this invention, the SiNWT with 33 nm lateral gate gap is fabricated on silicon-on-insulaor (SOI) wafer via atomic force mircoscopy (AFM) lithography followed by wet chemical etching progress. In the lithography process of SiNWT, the applied voltage between AFM tip and sample, tip writing speed and humidity of enviroment are controlled. The fabricated SiNWT is consisted of a silicon nanowire as a channel with a set of source and drain pads. The fabricantion process steps are including SOI wafer preparation, lithography process of pre-designed SiNWT by AFM lithography, and the etching processes of silicon layer and oxide patterns. This technique is greatly simplifies the fabrication process of nanoelectronic devices, and significantly will reduces fabricantion cost and hazardous materials. The fabricated high-speed transistor will consume extremely low energy.

Satellite-Earth Link Propagation Study In Malaysia

Several factors or parameters that affect the attenuation of transmitted microwave signals, such as rain attenuation, scintillation, cloud attenuation etc, are being studied. POST-PARTNERS promotion council organized by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication of Japan has initiated a collaborative project with the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia and has provided support in terms of the necessary equipments. Among the facilities that have been installed at the Engineering Campus of USM are Ku-band earth station, video conference facilities, magnetometer, ionospheric total electron content(TEC) meter and computer network. The possible experiments that can be conducted using the facilities available are rain attenuation, scintillation, video quality transmission through video conference and other applications such as telemedicine, remote controlling etc. The cloud attenuation can also be studied by comparing the signal strength received during clear sky and cloudy sky when there is no rain.

Since polymeric materials do not decompose easily, disposal of waste polymers is a serious environmental problem. Scrap rubbers are made up of rubber that does not meet processing and product specifications, leftover rubber from manufacturing activities and also old and defective rubber products such as gloves, catheters, tubes, old tyres etc. Presently, the amount of discarded tyres reaches 10 million/year worldwide. In Malaysia, the output of rubber gloves in 2003 was 13.05 billion pairs, catheters 84.75 million units and inner tubes 13.05 million units. With the development of rubber industry, a lot of waste rubber is produced not only in Malaysia but all over the world every year.

Removal of Ammonia in Leachate from Landfill

In this two staged process involve, the first is pre-treatment process, the ammonium in leachate is specifically converted to magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP), which precipitated out and then settled. The supernatant of the pre-treated leachate then enters on to the second stage which consist of two packed beds of natural zeolite. The final effluent concentration for ammonium -nitrogen is less than 3 mg/l with the removal percentage of 99.7 percent.

This proposed plant will not only remove ammonia, but will also reduce COD, SS and heavy metals. The treatment process is simple, low cost, uses natural zeolite which can be regenerated and the MAP formed can be used as fertilizer.

Remote Piloted Vehicle (USMeFA)

A row speed and low cost aircraft design for aerial photographic. Development of a Remote Piloted Vehicle (RPV) is a promising approach as the initial step in acquiring knowledge and building capability in the field of aeronautics design. The first prototype is developed and designed in modest configuration with simple basic requirements with low cost. It will be used as means of gaining fundamental knowledge, skill, and experience, required for further development. The vehicle will have maximum take-off weight around 18 kg and cruising speed about 100 km/h. It should be able to carry payload approximately 4 kg up to 1000 m height above sea level. Regardless the size of the vehicle, UAV system is a whole aircraft. Therefore, the methods and requirements to develop one is much the same as to develop the other kind of aircraft. The absence of pilot in UAV systems even introduces a new challenge in the topic.
