Wall and Line Following Hexapod Robot

Hexapod Robot is a mechanical vehicle that moves on six legs and guided by lines and walls. A fuzzy logic control governs the robot to follow the line and the wall. This control algorithm is embedded into PIC16F877A microcontroller to create a wall and line follower behaviour. The Hexapod robot will move along the wall for about 40cm distance of no line is detected. When a line is present, the robot will move following the line. In a development, a simple 6-legged robot was used which involved 3 servo motor as actuator to leg movement. Infrared sensors were used to sense line and distance to the wall as the input variable for the controller. Based on these signals, the controller controls the turning angle of forward movements thus making the robot move forward and turn at the same time.

Walk in Stability Chamber for Thermal Comfort and Productivity Studies

This Walk-in Stability Chamber (WiSC) was completely design on December 2006. A preliminary study was conducted to determine its characteristic and baseline data as it was a new and custom-made design. The manufacturing cost of the WiSC was RM300,000. The objective on commercialization of WiSC is to povide a facility and services in conducting and experiment related to temperature and humidity simulations. This WiSC consists of three rooms which are chamber room, control and a changing room. The chamber room equip with a cooling unit and heating unit which is the main system to create the desire climate and indoor enviroment. It is also include with a ducting system and a safety system. The main purpose of this chamber is to conduct and experiments and studies on Indoor Enviroment Quality (IEQ) including Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), human productivity and HVAC performance. Nevertheless, it also can be utilize to conduct studies in other field such as biologist experiment, media and ink testing, physical respond test to army and athelete, agriculture testing, test the quality of product and other that related to simulation of temperature and humidity. This WiSC was also participated in International Exposion of Research and Inventions of Institution of Higher Learning 2007 (PECIPTA 2007) and winning a Gold Award in Research and Inovation Fest 2007 at UTHM.

Timber-Lightweight Concrete Composite Floor System

Malaysia is rich with tropical timbers that have excellent mechanical strength properties which can be used as the main building structure component. Some of the Malaysian timber is able to achieve greater strength to weight ratio than both steel and concrete. However, it is not fully utilized, and the use of Malaysian timber is mainly on furniture production and roof construction. In the Ninth Malaysian Plan, the Malaysian government encourages local developers to use Industrialized Building System (IBS) to reduce the dependence on unskilled foreign workers in the construction industry and provide better quality houses. Precast concrete system is one of the most common IBS used in the construction joints, and the combination between timber and leightweight concrete could be an IBS in our local building construction. An innovative floor system consisting of the use of Malaysian timber and lightweight concrete has been experimented and developed to provide an alternative floor system for building. This system is a combination of the use of Malaysian timber with an excellent flexural strength as the main beams and lightweight foamed concrete for the slab with good thermal and sound insulation properties. The composite action between timber and lightweight concrete is provided by the multiple choices of shear connectors. The floor systems demonstrate a superior structural system in its high structural efficiency as well as being easy to install. It can be applied in the renovation or extension of existing residential and historical buildings, and building for soft soil construction.

Thermally Efficient Sustainable Hybrid Brick (TESH BRICK)

It is important to improve thermal performance of building envelope, as the energy efficiency of a building depends on the ability of the whole building envelope to retain internal heat as well as reduce heat loss and moisture movement from a building through the walls. Glass powder POFA have the potential to be used as supplementary cementitious wall material to replace cement which has a high level of embodied energy and is a cause for environmental concern. Also, fibers form oil palm residues are found to be a useful waste material that can be used to enhance the insulating property of walls . Thus, the developed TESH Brick has a unique combination of GP and POFA to provide strength because of its pozzolanic behavior, and the incorporation of fibers in the matrix to lower the heat transfer rate due to increase in porosity. Utilizing 85% locally available waste material in developing the TESH Brick products confirms its high degree of sustainability.

Since the last decade, a great deal of emphasis has been focused on the development and application of natural fibre as reinforcement in composite materials in many industries. This is due to the natural fibres composites are undergoing a high tech revolution and are replacing conventional composites in high performance applications due to their advantages over conventional reinforcements. Fir this reason natural fibres reinforced composite are applicable and need broader research programmers. Moreover, due to the relatively high cost of synthetic fibres such as glass, plastic, carbon and Kevlar used in fibre reinforced composites and the health hazards of asbestos fibre, it becomes necessary to explore natural fibres, e.g. kenaf, cotton, sisal, jute, palm oil, paddy, ijok etc. In additional, the main advantages of these fibres are their availability in large quantities in many countries, good mechanical properties and ease to manufacture. In this research, the Kenaf Foam Composite (K-FoC) was produced with combination of synthetic resin as a matrix binder and kenaf powder as a filler (with percentage of 10%wt, 20%wt, 30%wt, and 40%wt). This research investigated the mechanical properties of the Kenaf Foam Composite (K-FoC) and its potential applications as SOUND ABSORPTION DEVICE (for the high frequency NOISE APPLICATION). Example of the PROTOTYPE PRODUCT is presented.
