Dillenia Suffruticosa, The Future Innovation Towards Eco-Friendly Product

Polystyrenes are harmful as it contains a lot of dangerous chemical that is foreign to our body. Besides, it consumes much time to disintegrate and it also leads to environmental pollution. By using Dillenia suffruticosa leaves, we compressed it to create DiSFoS (Dilenia suffruticosa Food Storage) container which is more eco-friendly and biodegradable than polystyrene. This kind of plant grows vigorously on eroded soil, wasteland, forest edges and swampy areas. It has leaves (35cm long) and an oval leaves that cabbage-like with slight toothed edges. By promoting and applying DiSFoS, it can substitute polystyrene to have a greener product that is harmless to the environment and provide better healthy consumption to consumer because of its non-chemical product but from nature itself.

The scientists still brainstorming on what is the most efficient energy which is non petrol based energy, or in a common name, Alternative Energy until now. Recently, scientists already had discovered alternative energy including tidal power, wind tunnel power, solar energy, nuclear power, hydro-electric, hybrid and many more. In our project, the magnetism plays the biggest part on producing electric current. Basically, the main idea is combining the simple motor principle with simple generator principle. When this two mechanism is combined, then, we can generate cyclic electric current without using battery or any other sources of electric. In addition, the materials used for this project are affordable for everyone. We only use, copper wire, magnet, LED, clip paper or pin, iron rod and gears.

Stable Mass Production of Rotifer, Brachionus sp. using Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus Green-Water

In aquaculture, rotifer Brachionus sp. is the most extensively used zooplankton for rearing various marine and fresh water larval fish, during their first and second week of feeding. Production of rotifers has been dependent on the phytoplankton Chlorella which has been found to vastly improve the nutritinal quality of rotifers. Tilapisa is cultured with algae water which is known as green- water. This green-water is composed mainly of Chlorella. This study focuses on the production of Chlorella using tilapia culture at 10 ppt salinity which is the optimum salinity for rotifer production.Initial results indicate taht Chlorella production using tilapia culture is possible using all sizes of tilapia through control of stocking density and feeding rate. high density rotifer was cultured using Chlorella from this study.

Seed Production of Hybrid Groupers in A Hatchery System

Hybridization is interbreeding between two animals or plants of different taxa. The increase in the level of production traits due to acrossing is called hybrid vigour or heterosis. The term hybrid vigour points at the vigour, which is a real factor that can be seen with the naked eye, in comparison to pure breeding. Seed production of hybrid groupers is mainly about manipulating good characteristics of brood stock for stock improvement. Our research focuses on four grouper species specifically Tiger grouper- Epinephelus fuscoguttatus; Orange-spotted grouper- Epinephelus coioides, Giant grouper- Epinephelus lanceolatus and Mouse grouper- Cromleptes altivelis.

Root ROT Fungus Biofungicide

Essentials oils have shown incredible success with not only fungus problems but also many forms of root rot. This study aimed to evaluate and innovate a biofungicide from volatile components of Camellia sinensis leaves againstPoria hypolateritia (Synonym: Schizpora flavipora), that is responsible for red root rot in tea plantation. The volatile components were extracted from air-dried leaves of C.sinensis by using the steam distillation method, and its essential oil components were analyzed and identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The main objectives of this study are (1) to determine the taxonomic relationship between Prorocentrum and Dinophysis based on platelet configutarion in the periflagellar area or the sulcal area of the theca; (2) to investigate similarities and differences in the plate configuration of the periflagellar areas of Prorocentrum; (3) to identify additional taxonomic characteristics to be used in the classification of Prorocentrum species; and (4) to determine the molecular phylogeny of Prorocentrum species based on mitochondrial cytochrome b.

In the race of improvement for better life, we are unaware that furniture and building around us are continuously producing toxic gasses. These gasses can be harmful to environment or might be carcinogenic to human. One of known gas is formalin. The gas is generated from the decaying process of wood adhesive used in the construction furniture and building. The usage of non formalin based wood adhesive can be one of the most appropriate solutions for this problem. One of novelty idea for formalin free wood adhesive is the production of palm kernel based wood adhesive. Outcome of this idea and research at UMS show that palm kernel posses capability to form superior wood adhesive. The production of this product is definitely will change the current practices and policies in world wood industries.

MyVNNeasy - Detection Kit for Nervous Necrosis Virus

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) is a major viral panthogen infecting more than 30 species of marine fish and causing a serious threat to the aquaculture industry worlwide. It causes high mortality to newly hatched fish larvae and fish juveniles of up to three month old. The virus affects cells of nervous system resulting in cellular vacuolation and neuronal degradation in the central nervous system and retina. The infected fish showed abnormal swimming behavior but the present of NNV can only be confirmed using long and tiring histopathological method. In order overcome this problem, a reliable detection kit, time efficient and cost effective semi nested RT-PCR method derived from an innovative and creative idea is developed.

LesTani - A Potential Biofungcide for Present and Future Control of Ganoderma boninense the Devastating Pathogen of Basal Stem Rot

Optimal field production of oil palm in Malaysia and other countries of south East Asia are hampered by the presence of devastating Basal Stem Rot (BSR) disease caused by Ganoderma boninense. Oil palm has an economic life span of 25-30 years. BSR can kill more than 80 percent of stands by the time they are half-way through normal economic life. For more than 40 years, G. boninense continue to be a serious problem in some areas in Malaysia and Indonesia. Unfortunately application proven to be up to date, there is no single application reliable in suppressing or controlling the disease severity. Our research group in School of Sustainable Agriculture of Universiti Malaysia Sabah has found three important phenolic from oil palm root which was not reported before in oil palm that play a role in mechanism of resistance of oil palm to G. boninense. With the continuous effort and innovation, we come out with the right combination to manage G. boninense effectively.

Enriched Live Feed For Marine Finfish Larvae

The beneficial effect of phototrophic bacteria are manifold. The bacteria contained protein, lipids, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and other co-factors which could have potential applications as feed enhancer. The biomass when added together with other feed it improves water quality, increases grazing ability and reduces metamorphosis period in shrimp larvae. Bacteria also produces antivirus compound that suppress viral diseases and vitamins that enhance gonad development in fishes. Determination of Optimum Light Intensity for Larval Rearing of Sea Bass and Tiger Grouper for Aquaculture

This study carries five main objectives which are firstly, to record the morphological development of the eYes and lateral line system in the larvae and juvenles of the sea bass Lates calcarifer and tiger grouper Epinephelus fuscogttatus. Secondly, the research seeks to determine the feeding ability of the larvae and juveniles under varying light conditions during the developmental stages of eYes and literal line system. The third objective is to determine survival and growth rates of larvae and juveniles under various light conditions and fourthly, to determine the optimal lighting conditions for larval and juvenile growth. Lastly, the research paper aims to recommend a feeding strategy based on the light conditions for fish larval and juvenile growth in aquaculture.

Aquamat And Aquaponic Application For Water Recycling In Aquacultrure

Conserving precious water resource is absolutely essential to protect the environment during this period of of climate change. Aquaculture uses a large volume of water and often the discharge contains substances that adversely affect the environment. A new system that uses polymers in the form of aquamat and uses fish and plants that form food crops and makes use of nutrients that would otherwise pollute the environment if discharged is presented here. It is a model of environment friendly, low-carbon and efficient aquatic food production system. Aquamat forms a 3D structure that provides substrate for biological filters for water quality remediation by way of removal of ammonia and nitrite. Aquaponic combines fish and plant stocks in one unit. The waste originating from feeding and excretion in fish tanks is diverted to grow beds where seaweeds and other plant crops assimilate it into biomass for growth. The water thus purged of the waste products is diverted to fish tanks and this recycling process continues.

A New Method of Pathogen (Vibrio harveyi) Exclusion from Shrimp Culture

Shrimps are prone to bacterial and viral diseases.Their primary immune system is weak and they lack the ability acquire immunity by typical antibody production mechanism. Without effective biosecurity methods, the chances of infectious disease outbreak are high and a persistent cause of concern for shrimp farmers. Pathogen exclusion is therefore a key factor in sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture.Vibrio harveyi ranks as one of the most important bacterial pathogens which causes vibriosis in aquaculture. Traditional solutions are not effective and new methods are needed to address this issue. A new approach that integrated five components was developed to directly combat bacterial pathogen and boost the ability of shrimp to fight infection.
