Water Distilling Roof

The system is designed to be a part of the KUIK cabin. It comprises anodized pressed metal collector plate in a double-glazed glass insulated casing. Cold water is allowed to flow over the glass beneath for a greater temperature difference to enhance condensation. It is packed together with other KIIK cabin component including the wall panel and the fastening system in a box. The source of water could be from harvested rainwater, ground water and other sources such as river and sea. The prototype can produce about 1000 mi/m2/day in a mid day ambient temperature of around 33oC. Its performance could be enhanced with electrical booster.

Protein Repellent Membrane

Wastewater often contains a variety of organic and inorganic compounds of anthropogenic and natural origin. In general, the organic composition of wastewater is approximately 50 percent proteins, 40 percent carbohydrates, 10 percent fats and oils, and trace amounts of priority pollutants and surfactants. Due to the figures, industries such as agro-processing will generate more than 50 percent protein content in their waste whilst this constituents in in wastewater will heavily influence the composition of the drinking water supply. Through conventional wastewater treatment that is bilogical treatment, microorganisms are utilized to treat wastewater as they can uptake organic matter, however another problem raised when dealing with microorganisms such as the limited uptake and tedious maintanence needed. Our invention is to produce a thin-layer membrane which could separate protein from bulky waste and at the same time reduce fouling potential. This product combines low-cost material, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polysulfane. THe product has found to exhibit excellent separation performance (99%) when tested with BSA protein and proved repellence to protein. The finding will then benefit the industries dealing with protein-containing waste.

Multipurpose Jacket (COMSKET)

People find it troublesome to bring the laptop around. The few options available to carry the laptop around are single strap (single shouldered) and double strap laptop bags. For hand held bags, people tend to find it troublesome since the weight will cause pain on the palms of the user after a short period of time. Moreover it is not safe for users to carry it around in their palms since it will be an easy target for theft. the Comsket look like a common jacket but has an added compartment which functions as a pouch that will be able to fit a laptop. The compartment is waterproof and shockproof. When used as a jacket with a laptop, the weight of the jacket is distributed on the shoulders. the padded air mesh panels situated on the area of contact between backbone and the laptop will minimize the stress cause to the backbone while at the same time providing comfort to the users. We are also able to convert Comsket into a hand held bag. When the user does not want to use the jacket and finds it hard to carry, the jacket can easily be folded and keep into a pocket.

Miras is the temporary shelters that could quickly and cheaply be built for immediate distribution to the earhquake victim expecially countries likes Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Turkey and other. This type of shelter designed to meet all requirement of not only suitable emergency shelter but that of integration of emergency shelter into longer life structure. Miras constructed at the basic guidelines of temporary shelter and established that shelters should be, quick and easily transported to remote mountainous village by foot, constructed of locally and culturally familiar materials and methods of construction, and built requiring no special tool equipment. The potential market were to propose to the Malaysian Government or any NGO to use this model as an emergency shelter.

MGP - Modified Grouting Polymer

MGP is an impermeable material which has been tested in the laboratory and site application for its permeability characteristics. It it a novel innovative impermeable material which is an admixture between several materials including high performance materials such as bentonite and cement with local available material such as Batu Pahat Soft Clay (BPSC) and Oil Palm Clinker (OPC). This material is locally researched and can be applied for waterproofing functions. MGP may be in a semi-liquid or semi-solid form depending on its application. From testing conducted, it has been successfully applied in road construction especially where high water table and flood prone are is concerned. This material has also been tested in a trial road construction at RECESS Malaysia, UTHM, Johor. From the tests it was found that MGP has acted as waterproofing layer to avoid aqueous intrusion into the pavement structure. The material has also been tested to temporarily avoid leakages for pipes and other small leakages. By reducing the liquid limit of MGP, it can then perform as a layer of MGP mat that is as a prehydrated waterproofing liner.

HA-FIBOS (Hydroxyapatite Bioceramic from Fish Bone and Scale)

Hydroxyapatite (powder form) is known as bioactive was produced through heat treatment of Tilapia fish bone and scale. The fish bones and scale were separated by boiling in water for few hour and remove adhered meat by hand. The bones were crushed and milled after dried at room temperature for 48 h. The powder was analyses before and after calcinations at 800 and 1000oC. The experimental work is done to extract hydroxyapatite from Tilapia fish. The result shows that, the phase of hydroxyapatite detected through x-ray diffraction powder analysis after calcinations process at 800 and 1000oC. The intensity of hydroxyapatite phase increase with the increasing the calcinations temperature.
Bone and fish scale are considered worthless, impracticable and dismissed as a waste. However, it is known that fish bone and scale contain valuable component such as calcium phosphate , hydroxyapatite and collagen. Fish scale was never known before that has the element (calcium phosphate) same as our natural bone. Tilapia is fresh water have a potential to produced hydroxyapatite due to its big bone and scale.
Hydroxyapatite will support bone in growth when used in orthopaedic, dental and maxillofacial applications. Dence, porous and powder form have been used in different part of human body as implant such as bone replacement, bone graft and bone filler. Hydroxyapatite is normally produced through chemical synthesis method. This method might be complicated, expensive and time consuming. Hydroxyapatite obtained from animal bone has the advantage due to preservation of the properties of raw material such as chemical composition (calcium phosphate). This new finding can help to reduce waste, save environment and converting a waste by-product from the food industry into high added-valued biomaterial. Fish bone and scale is halal product that can be used without any query.
