Ragi Producing Bio-Ethanol from Feedstock

This experiment shows how yeast cake (ragi) produces biothanol. Bioethanol is a farm of alcohol produced from natural-occurring feedstock such as wheat,sugar cane and sugar beet by hydrolysis and sugar fermentation processes. In this research, wheat germ was used to produce bioethanol by fermentation with home made yeas (ragi). In this shake flask study, the highest amount of bioethanol obtained was between wheat germ (30g) and media YDP was 0.603g/L and 0.241g/L at 16hours. Production of bioethanol by wheat germ was two fold than that of YDP media. The yeast released glucoamylase to catalyse the hydrolysis of alpha-1, 4 glycosidic bonds in starch for wheat germ.

Production of Fertilizer from Leache

The philosophy of this work is to decrease the ammonium concentration in leachate by using biological and chemical treatments. Special bacteria that were attached to the bio-based bacteria house were used in the first stage of the leachate treatment. This stage resulted in reduction of organic matter. The treated leachate than reacted with hydroxide ions resulting in the release of ammonium in form of ammonia gas. The liquid phase from this stage can be used as a micronutrient, a special fertilizer that is rich in minerals. The gas then channeled to the sulfuric acid column to produce ammonium sulfate (urea), which can be used as a liquid fertilizer. As a conclusion two types of fertilizer were produced from the novel treatment process, which is highly demanded in the leachate treatment.

PIW: Plant Identification Warehouse

Voucher herbarium is used to produce plant taxonomic keys (PTK) for species identification. Due to the unstructured nature of PTK databases, it is difficult to retrieve the required information efficiently. Plant Identification Warehouse is proposed to overcome this problem. Our evaluation shows that information from the various PTK databases is merged successfully into the warehouse repository. It provides better performance in the retrieval, visualization, and identification of plant species.

Organic Odor Management

Bacterial activities in assimilation of organic matters could create an unpleasant odor. A solution that has been developed is proven in removing the odor by spraying technique. The interval spraying time and concentration of the solution are based on the localized problem which requires a proper study and trail activity. A simple spraying system could be developed by incorporating a timer, nozzle, pump and reliable piping system. A potential by-product from the organic matters such organic fertilizer or soil stabilizer after being sprayed by the solution. However, further investigations are needed to ensure the safety and health of the users.

KSWIN (Oil, Grease and Food Interceptor) - Applicable for House, Restaurants, Food Premises and etc.

Fat oil and grease (FOG) originate either from animal or vegetable sources. FOGS are generated from residential houses, food packagers, restaurants, food preparation hubs, cafeterias, hospitals, etc. The most common practice to get rid of these wastes is by pouring them down into the drain. This habit causes serious problems such as clogging, producing unpleasant smells due to the fermentation process, creating sanitary sewer overflow (SSOs) at pump station and other areas. KSWIN is developed by exploiting the difference of densities between operating cost to the users.

Ipomoea Aquatica: A Novel Bio-Sorbent for The Removal of Heavy Metals from Aqueous Solutiion

Heavy metals (HMs) are toxic pollutants released into the surface and ground water as a result of different activities such as industries,mining and agriculture.At present, a number of technologies can be used to remove HM from contaminated water such as filtration,adsorption,chemical precipitation and ion-exchange.However,these methods are not efficient in removing low HM concentrations,can be relatively expensive and may fail to achieve legal limits. Therefore,there is an urgent need for the development of innovative processes which can remove low concentrations of HM economically. Many of the previous researches have been conducted on the removal of bulk amount of HM fromaqueous solution,however,they could not account for the removal of HM present in low concentration,which is actually largely dependent on the affinity of the HM to the adsorbent. Few researches have been emphasized on the removal of low HM concentration from aqueous solution. Therefore, the removal of HM in both low and high concentrations was highlighted in this study.

Intelligent Paint For Microwave Absorption

Many studies have indicated that there are harmful radiations produced by transmitting telecommunications structures. Effects on human exposure include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and loss of breath. A way to reduce strong microwave radiations for human is by applying a microwave absorbing point coating to the wall of the built spaces, the paint mixed with ingredients from coconut shells is the main material that being study in this research. The findings shown that material applied with the paint can readily absorb the microwave radiations.

Man-made Wetland:
There are two types of wetland used in this technology, purposely designed to polish the treated sewage before discharged.
> Floated wetland - to digest floated organic matters and to absorb pollutants
> Grounded wetland - to digest settled organic matters and absorb pollutants.

Insitu Desgluding for Individual Septic Tank Using Anaerobic Bacteria

Individual septic is normally facing a desludging process due to incomplete digestion of sewage especially for extensive use by large number of people. Usually the problem is solved through suction of the sewage by a special tanker which create a bed smell and extra cost for transportation. Application of bacteria could solve the problem by converting the organic materials to product such as CO2, nitrates, H2O, biological solids etc. The growth of bacteria could be maintained in the septic tank by introducing the bio media known as bio filter or bacteria house. Combination of bacteria and bio media is widely used in biological oxidation of organic waste which requires a proper maintenance to sustain the bacterial activities at optimum condition. The technology that has been developed to overcome the sewage disposal is user friendly, cheap and ease in maintenance.

Degradable additives had been incorporated to film to accelerate degradation through oxidation and other process but most use synthetic metal complexes which may cause further environmental problems through leaching etc. Novel Green packaging films is from NON biodegradable polymer which are cheaper to produce but proved to have some degradable properties, upon exposure to heat, moisture and sunlight. Project can be commercialised with relevant film blown extruder machine to produce packaging films. It has NATURAL ADDITIVES which are non toxic if leached and safe for use as food films etc. It can used in packaging, bottles, agricultural bags etc.

The objective of this project is to produce a testing measurement which will be able to measure the level of flexibility of our athletes and provides a good reference to the coach for their training program schedule and for the sport industry itself to increase the athlete performance. The advantage of this instrument; it is easy to conduct and can get the fast result for the data. Moreover, it can be commercialized for the use of the gym and any sport complex. This testing measurement is innovated by using the basic sit and reach box and being upgrade to give the better and accurate result. This instrument is target for the athlete at school, universities and also for the Malaysian athletes. The outcome of this project is prototype testing measurement that can measure the level of flexibility of the athletes to increase their sport performance.

Fish Feed Booster

Fish Stock Booster is a fish feed from sago stems(Cycas Revoluta) which can be found in Sarawak. The stem,which consists of 61.8% carbohydrate, 23.15% protein, 9.72% fat and other s 5.33%, is found to contain suitable nutrients for fish. The sago stem was ground into smaller pieces and treated in thermal condition in fitted conditioners in a pellet mill. Then they were compressed, kneaded and shaped into pellets of size ranging 1.2mm to 1.5mm.
