Titano- An Excellent Air Purifier

Industrial development has brought prosperity to millions of people, but has also left a legacy of enviromental damage that continues to impact natural resources and ultimately the human well being. One of the largest problem now affecting the entire world is air pollution. As the world has industrialized and its population has grown, the problem of air has intensified. umans breath an average of over 3,000 gallons of air every day, according to the Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA), USA. Children have smaller body masses, so air pollution will affect them more quickly and more harmfully. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1.5 billion people are breathing dangerously high levels of pollution every day. WHO also reported that polluted air is one of the top ten causes of premature death worldwide. Therefore, it is important to find a sustainable sollution to treat the polluted air to allow us to lead a safe, secure and high quality life in harmony with the globale enviroment.

Synthesize of Nanoporous Ceramic Membrane with Bimodal Pore Size Distribution Using Nanosized Template.

A solid template will be blended into bedmate sol to create secondary pores in y-alumina membrane after calcinations. The creation of secondary pores is tremendously important as they reduce transport resistance greatly in ceramic membrane. Apart from developing the ceramic membranes with bimodal pore size distribution, this research will study the permeability behavior of the ceramic membrane with bimodal pore size distribution using a stirred membrane cell. Pure water permeability test, molecule weight cut off test and dye separation test will be used to help understand its permeability behavior. As the ceramic membranes have great resistance to aggressive chemical and high temperature, the novel ceramic membrane is suitable for applications in the textile industry to remove residual dye as the nonporous ceramics membranes have a molecular cut-off of < 1000 Da. In addition, the novel ceramic membrane has better permeation compared to conventional ceramic membranes. Thus, the novel ceramic membrane will be applied in the textile wastewater treatment in the final stage of the research.

Synthesis of y-alumina with Uniform pore Structure and Enhanced Functionality in Oxidation Reactions of Styrene

The main objective of the research is to synthesize ?alumina with bimodal pore size distribution and reduced diffusion resistance in catalytic reaction. The solid template (polystyrene beads or vanadium oxide nanotubes) will be blended into boehmite sol to create desired pores in the -alumina after calcinations. Using the centrifugal force or filtration effect, the template will be self-assemble in the boehmite sol. Primary pore size distribution originally exists in the boehmite sol and the secondary pore size distribution is created by removing the solid templating units during calcinations. Creating secondary pores is tremendously important as the catalytic process occurs more efficiently in a material with bimodal pore size distribution. This is because the secondary pores reduce the diffusion limitations were to exist in a catalyst with unimodal porous structure. After synthesizing and characterizing the -alumina with orderly arranged secondary pores, the ?alumina will be applied in oxidation reaction of styrene. The influence of the transition metals incorporated and their structural features on catalytic activity and product selective in styrene oxidation will be studied in the final stage of the research.

Synthesis of nanofiltration composite polyamide membrane using monomeric diamines mixture and its performance evaluation.

Polyamide composite nanofiltration membranes are fabricated under different polymerization time, diamine ratio and organic phase content. The effect of polymerization time on pore size is not significant for reaction times less than 120s but the effective thickness/porosity seems increase drastically even at low polymerization time. Besides, membranes prepared with the addition of 0.05% 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (BA) shows improvement in terms of flux and exhibits high rejection of divalent salt like metals ion. However, the flux started to reduce at higher BA content because of the decreasing membrane porosity. This means that diamine ratio is a crucial factor to produce an optimum membrane.

Spot Electroplater For Lead Frame (SPEL)

Spot Electroplater for Lead Frame (SPEL) have been designed to cater to existing problems face by the rubber masking technique, presently applied in lead frame manufacturing industries. One of the problems is the difficulty to seal the rubber mould with lead frames by uniforms deposit on lead frame. Consequently, this cause inaccurate plating on lead frame. The problems can be solved or reduced by implementing a technique that can act like a printer to draw any shape of silver plating area. This approach needs a technique which can produce spot plating. Uniform SPEL was invented which can plate a small area (as small as 1 mm in diameter). In SPEL, the electrolyte is continuous impingement to the substrate through a nozzle. The substrate (cathode) is connected to negative terminal and the nozzle (anode) is connected to positive terminal of the power supply. During the electrolyte impingement to the substrate, the currant is supplied to the system. Hence, plasting will occur and the nozzle outlet will determine the plating size. As a result, a 1 mm diameter circular spot of silver plating can be produced on a copper plate using 1 mm diameter nozzle, 0.05A current, inlet and outlet pump speed at 10 and 70 rpm respectively in 2.5 second plating time. SPEL is an environmental friendly technique as the usage of cyanide is minimal.

World Health Organization considers vitamin A deficiency to be public health problem in over 60 countries and fortunately Malaysia has something in palm oil industries to offer the world community towards the prevention of vitamin A deficiency because crude palm oil is the world?s richest natural plant source of carotenes. Carotene, in particular-carotene is the most important vitamin A precursor in human nutrition. Malaysia is basically an agricultural country and the major polluting industrial effluents have been from palm oil industry. Besides the main product crude palm oil, palm oil mills also generate many by-products which would pose a significant impact on the environment if they are not dealt properly. POME is predominantly organic in nature and highly polluting. Due to the readily available source of POME and growing value of carotenes, the main objective of this research is to develop a downstream processing for natural products, a-carotene. Bioseparation method such as organic-aqueuos extraction and ultrafiltration are used to retrieve oil from POME. Adsorption chromatography is further used to recover the carotenes contained in it. Besides that, the feasibility of converting oil extracted sludge to feedstuffs or organic fertilizer will be evaluated.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent(POME)pretreatment using Moringa oleifera seeds as an environmental friendly coagulant.

The treatment pf Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is an important issue for the minimization of pollution. POME is voluminous liquid waste wity high organic and suspended solids content. This polluting effluent makes it not only highly polluting but also extremely difficult to treat by conventional methods. Moringa oleifera seed, a biodegradable, environmental friendly coagulant could solve the existing problem of organics and inorganic suspended solids from wastewater. A further advantage of this process could generate an improvised suspended solid and organic matter in waste treatment without using alum or polaluminium chloride (PAC). This conventional chemical coagulats contains of aluminium as heavy metal known to have a carcinogenic properties and also may induce `Alzheimer`s` disease and per-senile dementia and also may have the side effect to aquatic ecology. Thus, the coagulation - flocculation process using moringa oleifera seeds after oil extraction as natural coagulant presents a viable alternative for the treatment of POME. This product would draw the attention of wastewater treatment industries and research institutes to benefit from it.

Novel Surreal Alloy For Assembled Components

Aluminium is one of the most important metals in our daily life, found in items as varied as cars, computers, buildings, packaging etc due to its light weight and high strenght. These properties are especially beneficial for fuel and energy saving especially in the transportation industry. Aluminium can be reused because the quality of the material does not deteriorate when exposed to heat. However, cast aluminium as assembled components are seldom found using the welding technique because TIG welding, the available joining technique for aluminium is expensive. A low cost friction stir welding (FSW) technique that is suitable for welding aluminium has been developed. To further exploit this technique, we havedeveloped Sustainable Recycled Aluminium (SURREAL) Alloy for assembled components that can be produced using a simple casting method and simple moulds. SURREAL slabs of various kinds of configurations can be made (such as lap, butt or T joints) which can then be joined by the low cost FSW technique. SURREAL components and the FSW technique would be excellent choices for the relevant small, medium industries manufactures that cannot afford invesments in more costly technique.

Microw-C: A Crucible for Rapid Processing of Electroceramics Using a Domestic Microwave Oven

The conventional synthesizing technique of electroceramics such as CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) using funace requires very long calcination time (about 24 hours). This is due to ineffective heating process of the furnace. The mechanism of furnace heating is through heat conduction from the material's surface inward, thus generate temperature gradient between outer and inner of the sample. The heating rate is slow and tends to overcure the surface while undercuring the interior of product. Such heating method dissipates large energy to surrounding, thus produced an inefficient heating process. Therefore, an alternative heating technique is needed to overcome these problems. Microwave heating is the most suitable alternative technique. Microwave heating is a quick and efficient method because of volumetric type heating which providing simultaneous and homogenous heating for both exterior and interior of the sample. However, microwave heating will need a suitable material to absorb microwave energy efficiently. Microw-C is a special formulated crucible material composite for for rapid microwave processing of electroceramics using a domestic microwave oven. By using Microw-C, we able to produce high dielectric constant CCTO by microwave to 24 hours when using a conventional furnace.

Micellar-enhanced ultraflitration for removal UF reactive dYes from wastewater for textile industries.

Miceller-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (MEUF) is amodified ultrafiltration process which combines the high selectivity of reverse osmosis and the high flux of ultrafiltration. DYes needs to be treated by a surfactant stream with opposite charge to the solute. The basic idea for MEUF is that surfactant forms large amphiphilic aggregate micelles when it is added to aqueous streams at a concentration higher than its critical micelle concentration (CMC). The ions and dissolved organic compounds (solute) can be mostly trapped by the micelles if they tend to be strongly attracted by the micelle surface and will be solubilized in the micelle interior, respectively. Most of the solute in dye-containing effluent (dye molecule) will be solubilized in the micelles. Micelles containing solubilized solute is larger in size which make it easier to be filtered by ultrafiltration membrane, leaving only water and a small amountof unsolubilized solutes with free surfactants in the permeate stream. MEUF was known to be highly rejected of lower molecular weight of dYes compared to normal ultrafiltration process. This process also obtained higher flux compared to the separation of reactive dYes using namofiltration and reverse osmosis processes. Surfactant used in this process can be recovered and reuse in the same MEUF process. Highly percentage purity of water could be recovered and reused in other texile industrial process.
