Simulation Model of Fractal Growth Pattern

Polymer films are normally prepared and studied for application in electrochemical systems. In the present work, polymer films have been used as the media to culture fractals. Diffusion-Limited A aggregation (DLA) type fractals have been successfully cultured in Polyethylene Oxide-Ammonium Iodide (PEO-NH41) films. To study the structures of the simulated patterns, we based our theory from the "Brownian motion". The model considered to be suitable with the complex geometric patterns obtained, is diffusion-limited aggregation that is a model for growth of a cluster by the accretion of random walkers.DLA is one of the most important models of fractal growth. It refers to a simple growth algorithm in which individual particles are added to a growing cluster through diffusion-like process. Starting from any suitable immobile aggregate seed in a plane, a new particle is launched at a random position far away from the aggregate seed and is allowed to undergo Brownian motion. When the random walking particle touches the seed, it is stopped and incorporated to the aggregate. The process of launching a random walker and adding it to the aggregate on its its first contact is repeated until the aggregate reached a desired number of particles.

Recovery of Nutraceuticals from Pink Guava Processing Wastes

Processing of fruits (such as pink guava) to produce fruits juices results in high amount of waste materials that still contain valuable by-products (eg.antioxidants or polyphenols). These wastes often have been discarded or used without treatment as animal feed or fertilizer. The waste-to-wealth approach for management of these residuals is a double-prong strategy resulting in the recovery of valuable by products as well as solving the waste disposal problem. In the case of pink guava processing, wastes are produced during unit operations involving refining,sieving and decantation. The recovery of bioactive compounds in these wastes is a profitable venture that can result in the recovery of polyphenols and other antioxidants. These products can be used in many high value-add industries such as pharmaceutical,cosmetics and food industries.Phenolic compounds exhibit a wide range of physiological properties,such as anti-allergenic,anti-artherogenic,anti-inflammatory,anti-microbial,antioxidant,anti-thrombotic,cardioprotective and vasodilatory effects (Benavente et al.,1997,Manach et al.,Middleton et al.,2000). Lipid extraction exclusively from the waste seeds is also attempted in order to recover the lipid content.
