Virtual Instrument Based Power Quality Recorder/Analyzer

The proposed power quality recorder/analyzer (also known as PQScope) is developed based on the concept of virtual instrument that utilizes the computing power of personal computer which greatly enhanced the recorder and analysis capability and reduces the cost of the recorder significantly. Virtual instrument concept also allows easy and flexible upgrade of recorder hardware and add-on of analysis software to cater the need of any new measurement requirement. Smart Halal Food Auditor (SHFA)

Smart Halal Food Auditor (SHFA) is a unique innovation that can be used assist Halal Food Producers to measure their compliance while continuously maintaining their conformance to MS1500:2009 requirements. This invention was drawn up following a survey of Halal Food Producer???s perceptions of the importance and performance of the 8 requirements of MS1500:2009 guidelines. The survey findings (IPM Tools) were used to devise this invention to help Halal Food Producers to audit their own implementation of MS1500:2009 before the enforcer from JAKIM audits their implementation. Exhibit 1 presents the innovation process of SHFA. The niche of SHFA is that it can be commercialized to assist Halal Food Producers in: i) assessing their conformance to MS1500:2009 requirements via the software; ii) providing accurate and immediate results; iii) acting as a monitoring system for the companies??? Halal committee; and iv) using resources efficiently. It is evident that this invention adds value by being cost effective and time efficient plus it is an environmental concern.

Predicting Breast Cancer Disease Using Data Mining Technique

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide and occurs in nearly one out of eight women. Currently there are three techniques to diagnose breast cancer: mammography, FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) and surgical biopsy. Generally, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Classification of cancerous cells as either malignant or benign is a serious and life-altering decision. If the physician diagnoses a benign cancer as malignant, the patient may undergo unnecessary testing and damaging to the patients health and of a physician diagnoses a malignant cancer as benign, the consequences can be much worse. These consequences being rampant spreading of the cancer resulting in extreme sickness or death. Breast Cancer Prediction System is an automatic diagnosis system for detecting and classifying breast cancer based on feed-forward back propagation algorithm. The model to classify breast cancer tumor based on symptoms that cause the breast cancer disease is proposed. Several neural networks model were created and trained using different number of neurons in hidden layer. An experiment using back propagation algorithm is done to investigate the potential of neural network model as outcome classifier. From the experiment, it is found that neural network model that has hidden layer 7 achieve the highest accuracy among others. The proposed feed-forward backpropagation algorithm performance is compared with other 2 classifiers and it showed the feed-forward backpropagation algorithm is the best classifier to predict breast cancer disease. The system provides more cost-effective and easy-to-use systems for supporting clinicians. For the breast cancer tumor diagnosis problem, experimental results show that the concise models extracted from the network achieve high accuracy rate of on the training data set and on the test data set. Breast cancer tumor database used for this purpose is from the University of Wisconsin (USI) Machine Learning Respiratory.

Loose Palm Fruit Picker

Oil palm fruits are clustered as bunches before being harvested from the palm oil tree. Due to height of falling of the bunches, loose palm oil fruits are separated from the main bunch due to impact of the bunch falling to the ground during harvesting. The current method to collect loose fruits collection is important because it will boost the crude oil production rate between 1%-2% from current average 20% yield from totally weight of the fruit bunch. The Loose Oil Palm Fruit Picker device has been designed, developed and tested in the oil palm fields to pick up loose oil palm fruit from then ground. Results show that the device is capable to collect the fruits from the ground and effective separate the debris from the fruits into a collection bag. The separator is able to separate loose fruits and debris whereby ,ore than 90 percent debris can be separated efficiently. The fruit picker utilizes vacuum power produced by a cubic cylinder petrol engine The design is versatile, mobile, and compact, light efficient and effective loose oil palm fruit picking in the terrains of a typical oil palm plantation.

Improvement of Functional Performance in a Tribotronic System through Application of Nanolubricants

Tribotronics, applies to the integration of tribology and electronics. Tribotronics or active tribology based on adaptive performance is thought of as being critical in the implementation of smart machine concepts. Recognition of the importance of tribotronics or active control of system loss outputs, such as those through friction, wear, vibration and etc will have significant beneficial economic consequences as a result of the associated accelerated rate of technological progress. These smart tribotronic systems can be embedded in a great variety of machines and mechanisms in order to improve performance, efficiency and reliability of the tribological units and therefore the entire machinery. Consequently, there is a constant trend towards more compact mechanical system with higher power densities and increased thermo-fluid loads emphasises the importance of the development of new design approaches and novel tribological systems. Tribotronic system includes four central components interacting. The conditions of a tribological system are monitored by sensors that provide information on temperature, pressure, friction, vibration, oil properties such as total acid number or additive depletion and other parameters of interest. The signals from these sensors are processes and transmitted to the control unit. In the computational or decision making part, real-time software based on tribological algorithms calculates the required action which is then implemented by actuators. Such as the required action system us thus autonomous and self-adjusting. This allows for on-line tuning of the tribological system for the best performance. Fig. 2 shows the wear of the metal (stainless steel) with lubricant (Helix) was about 72m whereas with the nanolubricant is about 25m. Fig.3 shows coefficient of friction of the metal (stainless steel) with lubricant (Helix) was approximately 0.012 whereas with the nanolubricant was approximately 0.004. The results bring the lubrication technology into a new phase that has not been explored through nanotechnology.

Green Bricks From Industrial Waste

This invention presents a novel method in manufacturing bricks from industrial wastes such as fly ash, billet scale, and quarry dust. Unlike the conventional method in brick production, this new approach neither consumed virgin resources as clay and shale nor emitted pollutant gases having remarkable environmental gain. The proposed method involves mixing the constituent materials with water and measuring the flowability of the mixture as per ASTM D 4203. The water content was adjusted so as to achieve a spread of 200mm to make it self-compacting thereby eliminating the need of vibrationg. The mixture was then poured into brick moulds, cured up to 28 days before use. The moulds were covered with wet burlap over night and the transferred to curing environment in plastic storage boxes at a temperature of 220C and the relative humidity within the box was more than 95%. Various combinations of the constituents were arrived at. Brick Properties like compressive strength, modulus of rupture, water absorption, and initial rate of suction, efflorescence, ultra sonic pulse velocity and durability were investigated. Results were considerably rewarding and promising and fit the relevant standards requirement, hence the bricks can be used as alternative to conventional bricks. This invention may help to reduce the cost of disposal of billet scale, quarry dust and fly ash and hence reduce the cost of treatment, decrease consumption of virgin materials and non-renewable energy resources, reduce the environmental contamination, and thereby contribute to sustainability, and generate revenue. There will be saving of energy which is otherwise will be spent in extracting, handling and reclaiming of these waste materials.

Development band Application of Kenaf Fibre Polymer Laminate for Shear Strengthing of Reinforced Concrete Structure

This research presents the development and application of kenaf fibre composite plate for strengthening of reinforced concrete beam for shear. As the demand of green materials has increased recently for building application, studies have been carried out on the replacement of man-made fibre with natural fibre in composite materials. Repair and strengthening of aged structure in Malaysia and all over the world is one of the most challenging field. Carbon fibre and glass fibre in composite materials have been used as reinforcing materials for repair and strengthening of structures over last decade. However, because of the cost and health hazard issue of carbon fibre, natural fibre could be one of the best alternative options. In this project, kenaf fibre is selected as an alternative material in composite plate as it is cheap, available and cultivated in Malaysia. In the development part, kenaf fibre reinforced polymer (KFRP) laminate with different fibre ratios with adhesive i.e. 5%, 10%, 15%, 19% and 25% had been fabricated and investigated experimentally. Results showed that KFRP with 25% fibre content had 124 MPa tensile strength which is almost half of the yield strength of steel plate. It was also found that 25% was the optimal fibre content to avoid air voids and honeycombs inside the laminate. For structural application, KFRP laminate strip with 25% fibre ratio had been used for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beam. Three reinforced concrete beam specimens were prepared for experimental investigation. One was prepared as control specimen, one was strengthened for shear using KFRP laminate and the last one was strengthened using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate. The dimension of KFRP and CFRP laminates were 7mm x 50mm x 300mm and 1.2mm x 50mm x 300mm respectively. The results showed that the KFRP laminate shear strengthen beams had 40% higher failure load as compared to control beam. The beam failed by KFRP laminate rupture followed by debonding and shear failure. In comparison with CFRP laminate, the failure loads of both beams were found to be 1% difference. CFRP laminate strengthened beam failed by debonding of laminate rather than rupture of laminate. The ductility, crack patterns and strain characteristics of KFRP laminate strengthened beam are compare with CFRP laminate strengthened beam.

Design and Development of HA/PLA Bioscaffolds for Tissue Engineering Applications

The HA/PLA bioscaffold prototype has been developed by 3D printing technology and has been customized for specific applications using injection moulding process. The scaffolds provide a shape and support for hard tissue regeneration. It functions as transporter for cells; growth factor and it also mimics the architectures and features of human tissue to direct the macroscopic process of tissues formation. Many research opportunities have been existed in the field of bone tissue engineering today. Many materials and numerous fabrication techniques have been developed to fabricate the scaffolds. The scaffolds considerations include biocompatible and biodegradable material, external and internal architecture design, fabrication techniques, appropriate of mechanical properties and degradation rate. Besides its biocompatible and biodegradable properties, the internal architecture of scaffolds also play an important role in determining the achievement towards the objectives of tissue engineering. Since there are many materials for scaffolds that have been developed in the field of tissue engineering, but no materials has proven the best performance so far. The main idea of this invention is to design and develop the scaffolds with the best geometry and mechanical properties that suits the properties of the cortical bones. In order to preserve the activity of the role of cells and regulating cell behaviour, the design of scaffold must be fulfilled several requirements including interconnected porosity that can supply nutrients, take away waste products throughout and for bone growth. Thus, for design of scaffold, macroscopic shape of scaffold is important on a scale of millimetres to centimetres. The size and orientation of pores and channels (macropores) for tissue in growth are crucial on a scale of hundreds of microns, and for pores within the macropores (micropores) on a scale of tens of micrometers. In order words, the pore size has been quoted for bone formation in interconnected channels or called macropores should less than 10m in size and the micropores within the channels should less than 10m in size in scaffolds. The novelty in this product is the material formulation and the design of the porous scaffold structure developed by 3D printing and injection moulding process.

An Intelligent Vehicle Route Finder and Optimizer

The problem of vehicle routing to achieve optimal cost is one of the many problems that have no perfect solutions. While many researchers have attempted to resolve this problem by using many methods with different techniques, finding the optimum or lowest cost is very complex. Nonetheless, they have managed to come up with approximate solutions that differ in efficiencies depending on the method used. In this prototype, we use Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find the shortest and least cost route for vehicles. The strength of Genetic Algorithm stems from its ability to be adapted to solve any problem through combination with other algorithms, or by modifying its techniques according to the problem as has been done in the prototype. The design of the graphical user interface is easy to use so that, any user can implement the program and get the results. After defining the route parameters, the user can execute the program by pressing the Find Route button. The program automatically draws the path and fitness value of the optimal route, besides the number of iteration the program has executed to find the optimal route.

A Novel Development of a Strategic Sourcing Supplier Selection for Capital Equipment (S4-CapEq) Decision-Making Model

Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) is increasingly using strategic sourcing as a means to control costs and risks. Consequently, supplier selection has become a major strategic decision for buyers. Supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision-making problem which includes both qualitative and quantitative factors. A reliable supplier selection method should be able to handle this need in order to support modern procurement requirement of having a systematic and transparent decision-making approach. This mandate, as well as the need for an increasingly strategic focus of corporate supply chain management departments, provides the basis for the current research. This study examines the appropriate strategic sourcing supplier selection metrics for procurement of capital equipment in the ESI in Malaysia. It identifies metrics contributing to the successful procurement of capital equipment which is seen as one of the many management practices that contribute to corporate success. A mixed methods approach comprising qualitative and quantitative survey was used. A case study of a key player in the Malaysian ESI formed the basis of the study with questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews. The study intended to identify and define the metrics that key stakeholders believed should be used for supplier selection. From the mixed methods approach, the metrics and their underlying definitional dimensions for selecting suppliers for capital equipment products was formulated. The outcomes foresee the possible initiative to bring procurement in the Malaysian ESI to a strategic level. Firstly, although typical Malaysian ESI seems to be formally implemented a governing procurement policy and procedures, the status of organizational supplier selection judgment is generally average. There was an identified need for improving organizational supplier selection effectiveness through an urgent introduction of a standard set of supplier selection metrics and corresponding definitional dimensions. Secondly, results suggested executives view supplier selection metrics from two different perspectives: supplier competitiveness and supplier attractiveness. Thirdly, the metrics ranked according to their importance level for strategic sourcing supplier selection in the ESI were product quality, delivery, price, support services, safety awareness, performance history and customer focus. Consequently, this study developed S4-CapEq decision-making model for policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in the ESI which incorporates elements of rational decision-making and corporate governance.

A Mobile Child Spying System

The system describes an android-based application that can be secretly installed on mobile phones, allowing parents to monitor and record all incoming and outgoing SMS, phone calls and location from their childs mobile phones. The system is useful because it helps the parents to track the history of SMS, phone calls and location, and thus, know of their children has misused the mobile phones for some unnecessary social relationships, criminals etc, or be in the area that is unpermitted by the parents. All the records (the communications via SMS and phone calls, and location) are logged and updated in a secure online portal, so that the parents can monitor remotely without their child knowing it. To realize this system, several technologies and fields are incorporated, namely wireless cyber security, mobile application development and wireless communication protocol. For each of these technologies to work properly, we introduced a new technique which is incorporated in our new design architecture that can hide, disguise or otherwise mask at least one as aspect of the monitoring processes: the convert identification of the mobile devices to be monitored, the covert installation and control of the monitoring applications (portal) and the covert exfiltration of collected monitoring results. The covert exfiltration technique that we introduced refers to a technique to move collected monitoring results from a mobile device while it is under the control or another without their knowledge or awareness. Thus, it can be those using stealth, surprise, covert or clandestine means to relay monitoring data. One of the important things in the architecture is the privacy and protection against intrusion attempts. To provide these protections, we implement a single sign-on and identity based authentication scheme. In these schemes, we introduced a use of salt value to enable unique identity and thus, prevent any intrusion attempt. The benefits of the system includes it helps the parents to monitor the use of mobile phones by their child. This significantly helps them to make sure that their child is carefully monitored and thus, avoid social criminals caused by social networks.

A Low-Cost Agent-Based Loan Origination and Automation System (Ab-LOAS)

In a loan application process, information flows from one location to another until it reaches a final destination where a decision whether to approve or reject the application. This process requires collaboration from various people either in a centralized location or at distributed branches. The banks objective is to issue a fast but uncompromised decision. In this project, we study a normative agent-based Framework and deploy it to a Loan Origination Process. We then implement the process in a multi-agent platform to demonstrate the applicability of the normative framework in time-constrained situations. We develop a simulation-based application to allow users to experience the effectiveness of applying the normative framework in the loan origination process. The results from executing the simulation show that the normative framework and the multi-agent system have considerably eased the flow of data and information and provided the users with the relevant status of the loan application.

The motivation of this invention was to overcome the shortcomings of commercial interactive 3D engineering application for learning.
