Ceramic-to-metal bonding presents huge challenges because of the large differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of the two types of materials. The degree of succes, when two different materials are joined, depends on factors such as the properties of the interface cretaed in the joined materials, which results in large residual stresses being generated during cooling from the joining temperature. Several techniques have been developed depending on the materials to be bonded such as solid state welding, direct diffusion bonding, hot isostic pressing, reactive metal bonding and active metal brazing. However, problems still exist that prevents maximum bonding efficiency between such different materials. In order to overcome these problems, friction welding could be the technique for producing high productive methods in joining similar and dissimilar metals and is widely used in automotive, aerospace and engineering applications.

Membrane Fouling Reduction using Helical Baffles for Crossflow Microfiltration

The introduction of turbulence promoters such as helical baffles were shown to enhance permeate flux during crossflow microfiltration. Helical inserts reduce hold-up in the feed channel; increase fluid velocity and wall shear rates and produce secondary flows or instabilities. The investigation of the influence of helical baffles on permeates flux during the microfiltration of titanium dioxide (TiO2) dispersion and bakers yeast solutions has been carried out. Tubular, single channel ceramic membranes with nominal pore size of 0.2 mikrometer were used. Variations of the helical baffle geometries, which are the number of turns per baffle length, were investigated.

MECD-Device (MuLti-Error-Component-Detection Device) for high precision calibration

Increasing demand for high manufacturing, cost savings, highers productivity, reduction of expensive material scrapped and rapid analysis of production machine's performances are issues in modern manufacturing industry. So far, to solve the problems of geometric uncertainties in high precison machine tools, conventional technolofies still dominate worldwide, where the six-degree-of-freedom of geometric deviations are measured one by one. These techniques are expensive to operate because of time consuming. Moreover, it becomes difficult to integrate the mesurements results to the latest versions of CNC and 3CMM machines for geometrics deviation compensation. A more effective means is required. Based on The British Patent, MECD-Device is developed to measure simultaneously dy,dx,pitch, roll and yaw, the five out of six-degree-of-freedom of geometric deviatiions commonly experianced by a moving solid body in space. MECD-Device employs two parallel low powered He-Ne Laser beams as its datum, Using the configuration of two beam splitters ad three quadrant-array photo detectors, five out of six-degree-of-freedoms of geometrics deviations can be mesured simultaneously by reading the outputs of laser spots emitted on each cell of the quadrant-array detectors. The MECD-Device is categorized as a device for calibrarion of reference object.

Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) "TAMINGSARI" is a small airplane operated and controlled by an operator on the ground. It is used for aerial surveillance and reconnaissance (air photography and monitoring, sampling and air spraying of plantation and agriculture products, etc) in remote areas, in catastrophic regions or in the under-developing region. For the deployment and operation of the RPV "TAMINGSARI in such areas, the RPV "TAMINGSARI" is designed and constructed using the "knock-down" concept in which it can be dismantled into several small parts of airplane: the wing (3 parts:centre, right and left wing), the body (fuselage), the horizontal tail, the vertical tails, the lading gear, and the RPV system which can all be placed into a bag. At the actual desired site, all components are reassembled into the RPV airplane.

IonExe: Novel Process for Leachate Treatment

Innovation sequential ion exchange (IonExe) treatment for mature landfill leachate via cationic-anionic and anionic-cationic processes was investigated in this research, aimed at treating ammoniacal nitrogen (NH_N), non-biodegradable subtances such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color from landfill leachate, simultaneously. Landfill leachate typically contains dangerous amounts of pollutants. Therefore, disposal of raw landfill leachate is hazardous to the ecological system. In-vitro Production of Taste Modifying Protein from Thaummatococcus daniellii Through Integrated Designer Membrane Technology

Functional bio-proteins, thaumatin from Thaumatococcus danielli has sparked new interest amongst researchers and scientist alike due to increased demand for natural sweetening ingredients. Thaumatin, a sweet protein, is 3000 times sweeter than sugar on weight basis. The stability of thaumatin under acidic conditions and at high temperatures as well as pasteurization condition makes it a very attractive sweetener in food and pharmaceutical application. The study here would be aimed at not only on the alternative extraction method for thaumatin but also the production of it through plant cell culture with the incorporation of membrane technology. An aqueous two phase system (ATPS) would be a useful protein fractionation technique as it is mild in treatment in ensuring the protein functionality. The integration of ATPS into purification steps of thaumatin from the fruits would offer a reduction and shortening of the conventional purification steps. The development of ATPS would also serve as an excellent tool for the fractionation of thaumatin from the plant cell suspension culture to isolate the cell debris from liquid broth after homogenization. As for thaumatin production, plant tissue culture may be considered as feasible, potential means of producing TMP in a factory setting as well as source of them. Plant tissue culture could ensure a continuous supply of uniform quality, highly specialized natural compounds that cannot be produced in equal quality or specificity by other means of biotechnological production. The integration of membrane system into the plant suspension culture would provide rapid separation and initial volume reduction through the natural separation depending on size which involves no chemical changes. System integrating in-situ membrane separation has been shown to have a higher biomass density to the continuous removal of spent media and the replenishment with fresh media.

The so-gel process is the basis of the in DiGel technology, in which polyhydroxy alcohol and its derivatives are gelatinized to form a stable gel. The incorporation of the biomolecules, anthocyanins of Carissa carandas is carried out during the formation of the gel. The anthocyanins are chosen as pH sensitive biopigments, since, they are natural and as such do not pose as environment hazard disposal after usage. Innovative Heterogeneous Sonoreactor System for Enhanced and Greener Biodiesel Poduction Process

Biodiesel is the most potential alternative fuel and it can be produced from vegetables oils. The utilization of waste oils as the feedstock for this fuel will be economically interesting. Conventional homogeneous catalysts are expected to be eventually replaced by environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalyst. However, the main drawback is low reaction rate as the reactants i.e oil and methanol are not miscible with each other. The use of ultrasonic energy intensifies the emulsification of these reactants to further improve efficiency of the heterogeneous biodiesel production process.This innovative process provides a cleaner and environment friendly solution whereby the reaction time and catalyst loading can be significantly reduced, resulting in a cheaper biodiesel production process. With the ultrasonic reactor system, the reaction time to achieve 95% biodiesel yields is cut short to less than 30 min compared with about 2 hours with normal mixing and less methanol is also required.Significant savings in term of the energy requirement and higher productivity are therefore expected. Besides, the catalyst can be reused for several time to further result in cost saving. As Malaysia is the main producer of palm oil in the world which is identified as the most potential feedstock for biodiesel, the impact of this invention on Malaysian economy should be very significant. The innovative reactor system is also applicable to many reaction systems of similar nature.

Hexagon Modular Pavement System

Permeable became a method in the mid-1940s to address storm water like concrete turf block for grass paving. Plastic versions were invented in the late ???70s and early ???80s. Interconnected void spaces in the pavement allow water to infiltrate into a sub-surface storage zone during rainfall. In underlying areas filled with highly permeable soils, the captured water infiltrates into the sub-soil. In areas containing soils of lower permeability, water can flow from the pavement through an under drained system. However, due to their weight (concrete pavers), minimum permeable surfaces and minimum loading capacity, the available systems are not suitable to fulfil the requirements of MSMA. In contrast, the HMPS provides a lighter product (made from PVC or HDPE), maximum permeable surface (more than 94%) and can cover up to 49.39 N/mm2 loading capacity. HMPS???s invention was based on the natural beehive structure.

Handlaunced (UAV) 'Greentech 2020'

The umnaned eariel vehicle (UAV) is a small airplane that doesn't have the pilot on the board and driven by the normal petrol engine. The UAV can fly manually or by self (autonomously) due to the embedded computer integrated into the UAV. The UAV is suitable for earial monitoring and surveillance such as monitoring the dangreous area (earth quake, flooded, tsunami), monitoring the illegal logging/fishing and controlling and monitoring the boundary and coastal line. All these applications are implemented in the rural area far away from the city. It is difficult to find the airport for take-off and landing of UAV in such area. Because of the petrol engine used, the UAV released the CO and CO during the light and can affect the air pollution and conribute to the global warming. To solve, a hand-launched UAV, named UAV 'GreenTech 2020' has been designed and developed in such way this UAV don't need the run-away for take-off and landing and don't need the normal petrol to drive its engine. The UAV 'GreenTech 2020' is flown, just by launching by hand and driven by the electrical motor.
