Spacetec: A Novel Spiral Wound Membrane (SWM) Module Spacer to Extend SWM Life Span & Enhance Permeation Rate

The demand for spiral wound membrane (SWM) module in water purification and industrial waste water treatment especially wafer fabrication and electroplating industry has been intensively increased in worldwide for the past decade. Current available SWM moduls in the market generally process life span between one to two years. To extent the SWM module life span, the most influencing factor is to design a novel spacer which is able to battle fouling phenomenon. Hence, novel type of SWM feed spacer was designed and fabricated to overcome fouling problem in the SWM. Current novel SWM spacer exhibts outstanding features in combating fouling and enhancing permeation flux. This novel spacer material been designed and fine-tuned by Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation, whihch further been tested and verified experimentally.

Small Ballistic Rocket Engineering

Rocket engineering has become a niche area in the School Of Aerospace Engineering. Since early year 2000, a group of student successfully launched a 3 inch rocket at the old engineering campus in Tronoh,Perak. Preliminary tests were conducted on the prototype in the following year; however not until year 2003, a research grant was obtained to further the project. Under the grant "Design, test and fabricate of a small ballistic rocket" the research group which consist of one lecturer and five undergraduate student has begun work on the design of two stages six inch rocket. A simple motor is constructed and will undergo series of static tests to determine thrust envelop. Aerodynamic characterization of various shape configuration and proper nozzle design also carried out to enhance flight performance. A flight-path prediction software is also written to localize prediction the rocket's drop zones. Another research activity which concentrates to deployable fins is also carried out. Following these research activities, actual flight tests will be carried out for verification purposes. Silicon Nanowire Transistor with 33 nm Lateral Gate Gap

The transistor is the fundamental building block in all electronic devices. Since 1990s the number of transistors in a mircochip has grown to over five million transistors. Silicon nanowire transistor (SiNWT) is a new promosing component on the development of nanoelectronic devices. In this invention, the SiNWT with 33 nm lateral gate gap is fabricated on silicon-on-insulaor (SOI) wafer via atomic force mircoscopy (AFM) lithography followed by wet chemical etching progress. In the lithography process of SiNWT, the applied voltage between AFM tip and sample, tip writing speed and humidity of enviroment are controlled. The fabricated SiNWT is consisted of a silicon nanowire as a channel with a set of source and drain pads. The fabricantion process steps are including SOI wafer preparation, lithography process of pre-designed SiNWT by AFM lithography, and the etching processes of silicon layer and oxide patterns. This technique is greatly simplifies the fabrication process of nanoelectronic devices, and significantly will reduces fabricantion cost and hazardous materials. The fabricated high-speed transistor will consume extremely low energy.

SIL - An Innovative Mineral Filler for epoxy Used in Electronic Industry

The mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of IC, solder and substrate is a common problem in the electronic industries and it has been solved using encapsulate, epoxy filled with silica. Currently exorbitant fused silica has been used as filler in the epoxy. SIL4 which has been tested in the proxy, resulted in excellent performance in terms of thermal and mechanical characteristics. It has a comparable CTE values to fused silica and thermal stability. SIL4 also exhibits high flexural modulus and flexural strenght at higher filler loading with minimal agglomeration. The production cost of SIL is around RM 1.00/kg which is mich cheaper than fused silica will reduce the manufacturing cost of electronic goods. SIL will enhanced the local raw materials to a value added product and also the quality of the epoxy used in the electronic industry. The huge local silica resources and big electronics industries in Malaysia will enhance the production and consumption of SIL respectively.

Satellite-Earth Link Propagation Study In Malaysia

Several factors or parameters that affect the attenuation of transmitted microwave signals, such as rain attenuation, scintillation, cloud attenuation etc, are being studied. POST-PARTNERS promotion council organized by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication of Japan has initiated a collaborative project with the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia and has provided support in terms of the necessary equipments. Among the facilities that have been installed at the Engineering Campus of USM are Ku-band earth station, video conference facilities, magnetometer, ionospheric total electron content(TEC) meter and computer network. The possible experiments that can be conducted using the facilities available are rain attenuation, scintillation, video quality transmission through video conference and other applications such as telemedicine, remote controlling etc. The cloud attenuation can also be studied by comparing the signal strength received during clear sky and cloudy sky when there is no rain.

In Malaysia, the output of rubber gloves in 2003 was 13.05 billion pairs, catheters 84.75 million units and inner tubes 13.05 million units. Rice Husk Ash: Based Sorbent/ Catalyst as a Novel Industrial Gas Cleaning Technology

Power plants and industrial combustion system currently produce a lot of pollutants that cause global warming and acid rain. In an effort to reduce and control the release of greenhouse and acidic gases as well as to utilize and solve the rice husk ash (RHA) disposal problem, a technology to produce highly active eco-sorbent prepared from RHA that is efficient in removing three important industrial pollutant gases (N2O, NOx and SO2) have been successfully developed. With the development of this cheaper and efficient novel technology, it is hope that this would be able to partly solve the issues related to global warming and acid rain problems.

Removal of Ammonia in Leachate from Landfill

In this two staged process involve, the first is pre-treatment process, the ammonium in leachate is specifically converted to magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP), which precipitated out and then settled. The supernatant of the pre-treated leachate then enters on to the second stage which consist of two packed beds of natural zeolite. The final effluent concentration for ammonium -nitrogen is less than 3 mg/l with the removal percentage of 99.7 percent.

This proposed plant will not only remove ammonia, but will also reduce COD, SS and heavy metals. The treatment process is simple, low cost, uses natural zeolite which can be regenerated and the MAP formed can be used as fertilizer.

Remote Piloted Vehicle (USMeFA)

A row speed and low cost aircraft design for aerial photographic. Development of a Remote Piloted Vehicle (RPV) is a promising approach as the initial step in acquiring knowledge and building capability in the field of aeronautics design. The first prototype is developed and designed in modest configuration with simple basic requirements with low cost. It will be used as means of gaining fundamental knowledge, skill, and experience, required for further development. The vehicle will have maximum take-off weight around 18 kg and cruising speed about 100 km/h. It should be able to carry payload approximately 4 kg up to 1000 m height above sea level. Regardless the size of the vehicle, UAV system is a whole aircraft. Therefore, the methods and requirements to develop one is much the same as to develop the other kind of aircraft. The absence of pilot in UAV systems even introduces a new challenge in the topic.

Recovery of Oil and Beta-Carotene from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and its Utilization to Value Added Product

World Health Organization considers vitamin A deficiency to be public health problem in over 60 countries and fortunately Malaysia has something in palm oil industries to offer the world community towards the prevention of vitamin A deficiency because crude palm oil is the world?s richest natural plant source of carotenes. Carotene, in particular-carotene is the most important vitamin A precursor in human nutrition. Malaysia is basically an agricultural country and the major polluting industrial effluents have been from palm oil industry. Besides the main product crude palm oil, palm oil mills also generate many by-products which would pose a significant impact on the environment if they are not dealt properly. POME is predominantly organic in nature and highly polluting. Due to the readily available source of POME and growing value of carotenes, the main objective of this research is to develop a downstream processing for natural products, a-carotene. Bioseparation method such as organic-aqueuos extraction and ultrafiltration are used to retrieve oil from POME. Adsorption chromatography is further used to recover the carotenes contained in it. Besides that, the feasibility of converting oil extracted sludge to feedstuffs or organic fertilizer will be evaluated.

Process Intensification of Membrane Bioreactor for the Production of Drug Precursors

The increasing incidences of cardiovascular diseases lead to the development of drug precursors, in particular, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, as the standard course of treatment therapy. The conventional method for synthesis of drug precursors involves the usage of both bioreactor and extractor. For this research, process integration and intensification are applied in a process involving simultaneous reaction and product separation using a purpose-built bioreactor with a single combined reaction zone and separation zone. This membrane bioreactor offers potential in improving the efficiency of enzyme-catalyzed bioconversions to produce drug precursors, reducing enzyme inhibition, and elimination of certain pieces of process equipment and attendant energy requirement. By using this process, a drug precursor for the production of ACE inhibitor could be synthesized by a process which allows a high degree of operating flexibility. Ultimately, the novel membrane bioreactor design will optimize profit, reduce costs and could be easily adapted to pharmaceutical industries and research institutes.

Preliminary Mission Analysis Tool (PMAT) software is a research conducted in developing satellite mission design software that is aimed to promote better understanding and efficiency in satellite mission design and analysis techniques to students who specialized in Astronautics whilst reducing the dependencies towards the commercial off-the-shelf software (COTS). The software is targeted to facilitate analytical aspect of the design process in the form of the computer aided interaction (CAI) and computer based learning (CBL). The outcome of this research is a graphical satellite mission design and analysis software package for educational purposes either for teaching aid or for students' usage. Among the important features of the software is the ability to calculate the important orbital parameters of the spacecraft orbit, simulate the spacecraft ground tracks, and identify satellite location within its orbit at epoch. Apart from being a teaching tool for lecturers in conducting their space mechanics related courses, the software is targeted to aid student in self-learning of the fundamental concepts orbital mechanics as well as to enhance the programming skills of the students involve during the development process.

Pilot plant for Water Clarification Using Dissolved Air Flotation Process.

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a process used to separate solid from the body of liquid for water and wastewater clarification. This process is preferred because it could treat more water compared to conventional sedimentation. The production rate from dissolved air flotation process could be as much as 6 to 12 times higher than those treated with conventional sedimentation without sacrifing on the standard of water quality produced. Currently, dissolved air flotation technology is imported from the developed countries. A pilot plant for dissolved air flotation process was constructed at Jalan Baru Water Treatment in Parit Buntar, Perak. It is used for portable water treatment to remove the particles present in the raw water so that the turbidity is reduced to an acceptable limit for drinking purposes. this plant is capable of producing bubbles with smaller range of mean diameter (50 to 60 microns) compared with commercial plant at Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur (85 to 95 microns), where the technology was imported from the United Kingdom.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent(POME)pretreatment using Moringa oleifera seeds as an environmental friendly coagulant.

The treatment pf Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is an important issue for the minimization of pollution. POME is voluminous liquid waste wity high organic and suspended solids content. This polluting effluent makes it not only highly polluting but also extremely difficult to treat by conventional methods. Moringa oleifera seed, a biodegradable, environmental friendly coagulant could solve the existing problem of organics and inorganic suspended solids from wastewater. A further advantage of this process could generate an improvised suspended solid and organic matter in waste treatment without using alum or polaluminium chloride (PAC). This conventional chemical coagulats contains of aluminium as heavy metal known to have a carcinogenic properties and also may induce `Alzheimer`s` disease and per-senile dementia and also may have the side effect to aquatic ecology. Thus, the coagulation - flocculation process using moringa oleifera seeds after oil extraction as natural coagulant presents a viable alternative for the treatment of POME. This product would draw the attention of wastewater treatment industries and research institutes to benefit from it.
