ReTRoS 1.0 (Real-Time Rowing Simulator)

Real-time Rowing Simulator (ReTRoS 1.0) is a real-time rowing simulator for rower, coach and administrator that being develop based on the weaknesses of ergometer machine that only focuses towards high-performance. Two accelerometers (for rib back and knee) and flexible sensors (for both elbows) were placed on the rower's body as an input for data acquisition. These data were then being processed by an embedded hardware device, National Instrument (NI) MyRio that has been programmed and results obtained were displayed via liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Graphical user interface (GUI) of the simulator has been designed by graphical code (G-code) using LabVIEW software. With ReTRoS 1.0, result of training can be visualized and monitored in real-time, history of the training can be also retrieved,whilst with the real-time comparative bench mark data from professional rowers, skills and performance can be gained and injury can also be minimised.

RESET - Reverse Engineering System Requirements Tool

Reverse Engineering is a very important process in Software Engineering. it can be performed backwards from system development life cycle (SDLC) in order to get back the source data or representations of a system through analysis of its structure, function and operations. We use reverse engineering to introduce an automatic tool to generate system's requirements from its program source codes. The tool is able to accept the C++ programming source codes, scan the source codes line by line and parse the codes to parser. Then, the engine of the tool will be able to generate system's requirements for that specific program. The purpose of producing the tool is to help recovering the system's requirements document (SRD) does not exist due to undocumented support of the system.

Reinforced Shell Mould (with palm oil fiber)

The present invention relates to ceramic investment shell molds (for casting molten metals) that are fiber reinforced to improve mold tensile strength which can avoid metal casting defects. Commonly, this defect is associated with the crack mechanism in the firing stage due to the fact that ceramic materials is highly sensitive to any thermophysical change and always response in a nonlinear way. In additional, the removal of moisture during the firing stage can cause shrinkage and warping which may lead to the failure of ceramic mould. Therefore, the use of palm oil fiber embedded in the shell mould system, producing a ceramic shell sufficient strength to withstand the high rigors of metal casting without failure or loss of the cast products.

Reinforced Shell Mould (Treated Organic Fiber)

The present invention relates to ceramic investment shell mould (for casting molten metals) reinforced with treated organic fiber (risk husk) to strengthen its body and avoid cracking mechanism that always associated to the failure of shell mould system and also to the defects problem in the end cast product. The risk husk fiber is chosen as reinforcement in this work because it contains silica element which has high melting temperature and at the same time can creates bonding in this brittle structure of the shell mould system.

Recovery Waste Water by Novel Rice Husk

The wide application of heavy metal in industries results in substantial amounts of environmentally unfriendly wastewater and solid waste. There are many methods to overcome this problem such as chemical treatment, membrane process, precipitation etc. In membrane process, the reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) is the common membrane that able to separate heavy metal waste. Although this method is effective, however high pressure driven in RO and NF is expensive for waste treatment. In order to solve the issue, this invention has explore the effectiveness of rice husk silica, zinc oxide and PVA beads as entrapping of toxic or waste component (i.e heavy metal), photocatalyst and antibacterial agent in wastewater separation process. The presence of rice husk silica was found can enhance photocatalytic activity (i.e by reducing Chromium (VI) to Chromium (III), can enhance the adsorption of heavy metal into the beads (absorp nearly 99% Chromium (VI)) and has an antibacterial properties. This PVA beads are microporous, larger pore diameters, thus providing a lower mass transfer resistance. In addition, this improves the efficiency and recycles ability of the beads. In facts, combination the low pressure driven membrane such as ultrafilteration (which is not effective for heavy metal removal) with this special formulated polymer bead make it useful for the metal ion separation process.

Realtrack Materials (RTM) Prototype

The product is intended to improve materials tracking and the overall process of materials management in construction project. Automated data collection using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for tracking materials involves the use of a tag (as a transponder) and a reader ( as an interrogator). The RFID equipment included i-Q8 and i-Q32T active RFID tags with a range of 100 metres/300 ft (read/write range), and an i-CARD 3 (with adjustable output power for a read/write range that is tune able up to 100m/300ft) for the RFID reader (interrogator). The i-Q32T and i-Q8 tags have been selected based on the large memory capacity and make them suitable for use for all the proposed processes. The use of i-Card 3RFID readers because it is a mobile RFID reader, which can be connected to he PCMCIA slot of a laptop or a PDA. The product can be divided into three main component, which are automated materials tracking, database and resource modeling. Each component plays are different role in the prototype system. The RFID system enabled the automated materials tracking while the central MS Access database provided the information of the ??? Materials Order (MO)???, ???Delivery Status (DS)???, ???Storage Information (SI)??? and ??? Use Status (US)???. The MS Project provided the resources modeling function and scheduling information for the system

Real Time Feedback and 3D Visualization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Low-Cost Development

This project develops a real-time 3D Graphical User Interface (GUI) for UAV feedback control which transfer and receives feedback of UAV movements and attitudes from real environment of an aircraft control board. The FlightGear enables a broad dissemination of UAV information to the personnel in the navy. The interface uses a public domain DirectX and Flight Simulator Software Development Kit (SDK) for 3D graphics engine and display. It integrates terrain data supplied by Joint Geospatial Facility and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). It also enables the pilot to control the UAV movement through a USB modified radio transmitter to obtain a real time feedback of aerial vehicle altitudes from units on the field.

RBA Previous Concrete: RBA- Towards Sustainable Constructin

Recycled Biomass Aggregate (RBA) is a low density aggregate derived from the waste produced by the textile industries. RBA previous concrete is a composite material consisting of coarse RBA,Portland cement and water. It is different from normal concrete as the mixture contains no fines in it. The high porosity of RBA concrete allows water easy to pass through it, thereby it can be used for the pavement lock, parking lots and road construction to prevent water stagnant. The physical properties and chemical compound of RBA was investigated. Meanwhile, the physical and mechanical properties of RBA concrete have been experimented. The low density and high porosity of RBA concrete has good potential to establish the cost effective and green construction materials. The use of RBA concrete will lead to improved quality of life and conservation of the environment.

The hybrid artificial liver support system (BALS) is expected to become an effective treatment as bridge for patients with severe liver failure, who are waiting for liver transplantation. Various types of BALS using cultured hepatocytes have been tested by animal model,and the results of these experiments show that it is not easy to maintain the liver specific function of hepatocytes during operating the BALS.

Radial Flow Bioreactor for Bioartificial Liver Assist System

The bioartificial liver assist system (BALS) is expected to become an effective treatment as a bridge for patients waiting for liver transplantation. Experiment results show that it is not easy to maintain the liver specific function of hepatocytes during operating the BALS because of the leak of oxygen and nutrients. Hence our bioreactor system provides the oxygenator and the radial flow of medium that supplies the nutrient efficiently. The adhesion and growth of the cultured hepatocytes are greatly improved using PTFE non-woven fabrics coated with PAU. Its functional activities were established after being kept for one week at high value in this bioreactor system. Results indicate that PTFE non-woven fabric coated with PAU and radial flow technique is the best bioreactor for BALS.

Prototype Development Using Pulverized Palm Oil Based Fly Ash

Development of 3D Prototype has become significant in the manufacturing industry. However, 3D Printer is currently limited in the choice of materials and this involved high operating cost. The invention introduces new approach in developing an alternative mixed material (fly ash mixed with existing plaster-based powder) that can improve the existing practice with the aim to cut down the cost. The fly ash was pulverized and sieved to a certain particle size before it was mixed with the existing material.

Protein Repellent Membrane

Wastewater often contains a variety of organic and inorganic compounds of anthropogenic and natural origin. In general, the organic composition of wastewater is approximately 50 percent proteins, 40 percent carbohydrates, 10 percent fats and oils, and trace amounts of priority pollutants and surfactants. Due to the figures, industries such as agro-processing will generate more than 50 percent protein content in their waste whilst this constituents in in wastewater will heavily influence the composition of the drinking water supply. Through conventional wastewater treatment that is bilogical treatment, microorganisms are utilized to treat wastewater as they can uptake organic matter, however another problem raised when dealing with microorganisms such as the limited uptake and tedious maintanence needed. Our invention is to produce a thin-layer membrane which could separate protein from bulky waste and at the same time reduce fouling potential. This product combines low-cost material, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polysulfane. THe product has found to exhibit excellent separation performance (99%) when tested with BSA protein and proved repellence to protein. The finding will then benefit the industries dealing with protein-containing waste.

Pineapple Leaf Fiber in Producing Paper

Pineapple Leaf Fiber can reduce the felling of trees. It is also to determine whether pineapple leaf fiber is suitable as a base to increase the mechanical properties of the product. This project is a collaboration between the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) with the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPIM) in the search for new methods of production of paper from pineapple leaf fibers. Samples of pineapple leaf fiber are mixed with recycled newspapers in different composition (pineapple leaf fibers mixed with recycled newspapers). The paper then can be used for craft products.

Patellar Reflex Using LVDT

Medical electronics could be considered as a one of the bright field recently, due to the advancement of technology development and materials. In medical practices, there is a lot of medical procedure that has been utilized of technology. In neurologist areas, deep tendon reflexes are the important physical sign for neurological diagnosis since every patient can has their normal and abnormal reflex response depend on underlying pathology. The system is capable to detect abnormality of deep tendon reflex and determine whether individual have normal upper motor neuron lesion or lower motor neuron lesion with the support from other neurological examination. The deep tendon reflex level easily detected by the system after the patellar tendon is tap. The system also capable of detect the differentiate level graded based on knee displacement extension using Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) in LabVIEW 8.0 and level graded become more accurate and remove contradicts among medical practitioners regarding the correct level. It also works as a tool for reflex pattern analysis and capable to standardize the findings. With the advancement of this area, it is vital to have a system that capable to manage all the medical data electronically. Basically, the ideas of this project is to come out ith a system that capable to observe, capture, analyze the reflex level of any patients and display the result on the personal computer.
