Agrowaste to Biofuel via Microwave Pyrolysis

Palm kernel shells and saw dusts were subjected to microwave pyrolysis for conversion to bio-oil. Volatiles from these experimets were trapped in series of condensers and the liquid fractions of the products were characterised. Advantage of this microwave system is the short time needed to achieve high temperature compared to conventional pyrolysis system. The microwave prolysis system gives high yield of bio-oil with better heating values compared to bio-oil from conventional pyrolysis of the same types of sample.

Agriculture Support System and Field Tools: Oil Palm Tree Crown Delineation and Enumeration (TCDE(c))Using IKONOS Satellite Images

Manual interpretation of medium and high spatial resolution
aerial imagery for forestry has evolved in the late 20th
century. For this type of application, manual delineation
and enumeration of the tree crowns on the aerial images
are the main activities. In this context, a new research
branch aiming at fully or partly replacing human image
interpreter by a ""seeing computer"" was born. For this new
research branch, the application of image processing techniques in delineating the tree crowns on the images has
been greatly explored and many delineation techniques
has emerged. The launching of IKONOS satellite has
opened up another option of the input data. A project utilizing the resolution of the IKONOS satellite image for
palm oil tree delineation and enumeration purposes in place
of aerial images (which was once a common input data
for this application) pursued at UNIMAS has successfully
produced a prototype model for tree crown enumeration.
The use of this model, compared with the result of manual
delineation, gave an average enumeration accuracy of
92.10%, with the percentage of correctly spotted tree
crowns being 84.08%.

Mobile Barcode Based Examination Attendance System is developed to provide an efficient, reliable and secure method of recording final exam attendance system. This attendance management system involves two phases of system development, mobile application and online database server. The system integrates mobile technology, students information and web technologies. This system not only replaces the manual examination attendance system, but also provides extra facilities. For example, the invigilators can check their duties and venue information anywhere anytime. The system provides different types of reports like attendance in some particular hall or only the list of absent students from some.

In most of the universities and educational institutions, exam attendance system is operated manually where student is required to fill in the attendance sheet before or during the examination. It is very tedious and time consuming task for invigilators to go to every student to collect the attendance sheet. Besides, high paper usage is reported and there is a risk of missing data due to human errors. Hence, this system provides efficient, reliable and more secure ways of handling the examinations. The mobile application provides a friendly Graphical User interface (GUI) to accomplish all the tasks in almost (3) clicks.

A New Fingerprint Matching Method for Security Verification & Identification

Bit-plane extraction for fingerprint image is explored and a new fingerprint verification system is developed by using Phase-Only Correlation (POC) function. The grayscale image of the fingerprint is extracted into its eight bit-plane and selected bit-plane is used as the input image of the recognition system. The bit-plane extraction approach is chosen due to its advantages in using lesser memory storage and ability to carry useful information for verification purposes. Application of this method in fingerprint recognition have showed good recognition rates.

A Model for Spatial Query Retrieval by Sketch

Currently, there is a lack of reliable model that can support spatial query by sketch for large and continuous
GIS databases. To develop such a sketch representation model, essential properties of sketch object
and database to be taken into considerations include shape, relative size, relative direction, relative distance
and local coordinate referencing. This project has successfully developed a feasible and practical
model for structural spatial query and retrieval of spatial information from spatial databases. The model
has been tested and compared with two main stream models used for structural spatial query i.e. the Conventional and Blaster models. The test result has proven the applicability and practicality of the
UNIMAS model. It produces better result in overall situations.

Sustainable Technology for Reduction of Ammonia Pollution in the Environment

This work reports simple techniques of isolating fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) from decomposed organic materials and the ability of these organic acids in controlling ammonia loss from urea. FA and HA could be isolated in 7 h instead of 2-7 days. FA reduced ammonia loss by 50% compared to urea alone. It also cause the highest retention of ammonium and nitrate. There was 100% ammonia volatilization control. urea-N use efficiency was 30-40%.

Water Distilling Roof

The system is designed to be a part of the KUIK cabin. It comprises anodized pressed metal collector plate in a double-glazed glass insulated casing. Cold water is allowed to flow over the glass beneath for a greater temperature difference to enhance condensation. It is packed together with other KIIK cabin component including the wall panel and the fastening system in a box. The source of water could be from harvested rainwater, ground water and other sources such as river and sea. The prototype can produce about 1000 mi/m2/day in a mid day ambient temperature of around 33oC. Its performance could be enhanced with electrical booster.

Wall and Line Following Hexapod Robot

Hexapod Robot is a mechanical vehicle that moves on six legs and guided by lines and walls. A fuzzy logic control governs the robot to follow the line and the wall. This control algorithm is embedded into PIC16F877A microcontroller to create a wall and line follower behaviour. The Hexapod robot will move along the wall for about 40cm distance of no line is detected. When a line is present, the robot will move following the line. In a development, a simple 6-legged robot was used which involved 3 servo motor as actuator to leg movement. Infrared sensors were used to sense line and distance to the wall as the input variable for the controller. Based on these signals, the controller controls the turning angle of forward movements thus making the robot move forward and turn at the same time.

Walk in Stability Chamber for Thermal Comfort and Productivity Studies

This Walk-in Stability Chamber (WiSC) was completely design on December 2006. A preliminary study was conducted to determine its characteristic and baseline data as it was a new and custom-made design. The manufacturing cost of the WiSC was RM300,000. The objective on commercialization of WiSC is to povide a facility and services in conducting and experiment related to temperature and humidity simulations. This WiSC consists of three rooms which are chamber room, control and a changing room. The chamber room equip with a cooling unit and heating unit which is the main system to create the desire climate and indoor enviroment. It is also include with a ducting system and a safety system. The main purpose of this chamber is to conduct and experiments and studies on Indoor Enviroment Quality (IEQ) including Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), human productivity and HVAC performance. Nevertheless, it also can be utilize to conduct studies in other field such as biologist experiment, media and ink testing, physical respond test to army and athelete, agriculture testing, test the quality of product and other that related to simulation of temperature and humidity. This WiSC was also participated in International Exposion of Research and Inventions of Institution of Higher Learning 2007 (PECIPTA 2007) and winning a Gold Award in Research and Inovation Fest 2007 at UTHM.

Universal Tracking And Navigation System (U-trac)

The Universal Tracking and Navigation System (U-trac) is a telematic based security and navigation solution that is aimed to be a formidable solution to any kind of vehicle positioning needs. Ultimately, the aim of the project is to be able to pinpoint, immobilize or remotely control the particular target vehicle. U-trac is a very wide open ended solution. However, this first prototype solution is to serve as the proof of concept. Generally, the first part of the system is the GSM-GPS devise that incorporates the Rabbit 8-bit microprocessor as the brain of the system that will make the GPS oncore receiver able to communicate with the Modem embedded within. The device will receive the GPS oncore receiver able to communicate with the Modem embedded within. The device will receive the GPS signal and then sent the SMSes at certain preset interval to the server system. Another device (coined as the GSM-FTP) developed with also the 8-bit Rabbit microprocessor will incorporate the usage of its TCP/IP feature to establish an FTP session each time instructional data from the server is sent or navigational data are received from the GSM-GPS devise. Through the FTP session which is being made possible via Ethernet connection, the device will upload the navigational SMSes to the databases. Graphical interpretion of the navigational raw SMS strings in the databases will be done by the web based GUI developed on the PHP platform. The GUI is expected to be able to track vehicle installed with the devise graphically by interpreting the navigational data stored in the database. Currently, it is proven that it can be used as a fleet management solution due to the capability of the GUI to display multiple target vehicle transmitting the SMS to the system. Studies are also being made to establish the system to work in the GPRS and UMTS infrastucture since it will significantly reduce the operational and deployment cost of the system. This proposed system however is still undergoing development to be deployed on a better platform as such better databases, microprocessor and web API in order to help increase the GPS accuracy, security of the data transaction as well as the robustness of the system.

When a passenger vehicle collides with the rear end or side of trucks, trailers or buses not equipped with effective guards (bumpers), it continues to travel beneath the taller chassis of the larger vehicle, the passenger vehicle "ride under" the larger one.
