Method of Manufacturing Decorative Woods Products

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing bark flooring from sago bark waste for interior decoration such as craft,wall tiles, product design and furniture beside flooring. The method for manufacturing bark flooring comprises the steps of shaping and treating sago barks in chemical solution, laminating three layers of two clamped pieces of the sago barks to form a bark block,slicing the blocks to form square tiles with surface grains and composing the tiles on composite backing with bio-binder by hot press and post treating the tiles.

In Vitro Regeneration of Shorea Parvifolia Dyer Parvifolia

Shorea Parvifolia Dyer ssp. Parvifolia or locally known
as Meranti Sarang Punai, is a commercial timber tree species
belonging to Dipterocarpaceae family. It has been
identified as one of the potential fast growing indigenous
species suitable for planting in the hilly areas. The trees
are of great economic importance for its timber, particularly important for producing plywood, veneer, furniture, hardboard and particleboard. Despite the high economic value of this species, the in vitro regeneration system for this valuable timber species has yet to be established. The development of in vitro regeneration systems will immensely speed up the production of plantlets to meet the current demands on improved planting materials for reforestation, tree plantation and tree improvement programmed. In fact, the establishment of commercial tree
plantations has the potential to supply the bulk of wood
needs on a long-term basis, and thus reduce the harvest
pressure on natural forests for wood production to an acceptable level. An on-going project at UNIMAS has
established the micropropagation protocols for largescale
propagation of plantlets and development of an
in vitro regeneration system for genetic modification
of S. parvifolia Dyer parvifolia.

Iban & Melanau Word Processing Tool-Spell Checker

One of the key productivity (and learning) tools in writing is the spell-checker. In this research, the linguistics nature of the Sarawak languages was investigated, the findings leveraged and the Iban and Melanau Spelling Checker was implemented. This spell checker replaces the old spellings of Iban words with new spellings. The accuracy of spell checking is high as it performs the dictionary look-up together with the Morphological Analyser. POS (part-of-speech) tagger which is embedded inside the spell checker for Iban language has increased the accuracy of suggesting misspelled words for the candidates, from the most likely to the least likely.

Flexi-Jacket: Practical Jacket for Recreational Activities.

Recently backpackers or climbers used to carry a lot of gadgets during recreational activities such as tent, sleeping bags, safety kits and others. Usually they need to bring an extra bag to put all these considerably heavy gadgets. Through this observation, the aim of this study was to design a jacket that is versatile, lightweight and easily transformed into tent as a temporary shelter. Flexi-jacket has been designed to help in minimizing the above problems. Flexi-jacket key design concept are ease to set-up, light weight, ability to withstand raining weather and the material application are from shower resistant polYester micro fiber, waterproof zipper, adjustable hood, and elastic wristband to fit all sizes. This innovative jacket includes the safety reflector stripes for safety purposes especially at night. It has a practical compartment for carrying basic gadgets such as torchlight, compass, safety kit and a map. Future features will include foldable solar panel to the jacket for light purposes at night or for charging batteries to power cell phones and lap top computers.This product is targeted to the individuals, backpackers and hiking Gadget Company.

Fastip-X Kit

The fasTiP-X is a simple procedure to prepare DNA for PCR amplification. It can be completed in 20 minutes and therefore increases the possibility for high-throughput genotyping. It allows DNA extraction without contacting any harmful chemicals and liquid nitrogen. Besides, it uses small amount (about 5mm2) of samples which reduces minimal lost of sample. This kit is useful in forestry forensic, genetic diversity, marker-assisted selection (MAS) and species/clone identification.

Fabric Remnants: Potential Material for Furniture Products

The practice of recycling of wastes is much encouraged
in the context of sustainable use of natural resources. Materials abundantly found in the municipal solid wastes (e.g. waste papers, aluminium cans, glass and plastic bottles, steel and old tires) have been recycled or reused worldwide, in order to reduce the rate of energy and fresh raw material consumption or exploitation. One of the recyclable items produced in abundant by the textile and clothing/tailoring industries is fabric remnants. The most common use of such remnants is as cleaning rags. However,
initial R & D work at UNIMAS found that fabric remnants
can potentially be transformed into structurally firm
objects such as furniture and other household items.

Ergonomically Designed Mechanical Device for Faster Healing of Open Fractures of the Tibia

The number of motorcycle accidents in Malaysia is on the rise. Such accidents typically result in fractures of the lower limb, especially the tibia. With the use of external fixators and plastic surgical techniques, many of the severe fractures have been salvaged when they would have been amputated previously. Studies on animals have shown that one of the main factors affecting healing of bone fractures is through increasing an axial load on the bone. Bone heals faster when there is an increased weight loading or axial compression at the fracture site, because when stress is put on a fractured limb, there is an increase in blood supply to the muscles surrounding the fracture and this will bring in the necessary nutrient components for healing. Furthermore, the rate of infection may be reduced due to an increase in the efficacy of the tissue defense mechanism from the increase in blood supply. This has led doctors to recommend patients to bear weight on the fractured leg while it is immobilized with an external fixator. However, most post-accident patients have difficulty in controlling their movements in the erect ambulatory position. An ergonomically designed mechanical device that can help to increase the rate of union in the healing of open fractures of the tibia has been developed at UNIMAS. The device is presently being tested in local hospitals.
