Rapid Assessment of Bacillus Cereus Associated With Sago Processing

Sago processing industry is one of the highly potential industries in Sarawak. The exportation of sago starch from Sarawak is between 30,000 and 500,000 tons which generate a revenue of approximately US$3.4- 10.8 millions per year, being the most important crop after palm oil.
Bacillus cereus is an ubiquitous, Gram-positive bacteria which is commonly found in soil and food, especially the starchy food such as sago. The bacterium is an important foodborne pathogen that causes foodborne illness such as diarrhea, vomiting, meningitis and even death.
Hence, it is important to ensure the food safety of sago processing industry by assessing and identifying the level of microbial contamination.

In Vitro Regeneration of Shorea Parvifolia Dyer Parvifolia

Shorea Parvifolia Dyer ssp. Parvifolia or locally known
as Meranti Sarang Punai, is a commercial timber tree species
belonging to Dipterocarpaceae family. It has been
identified as one of the potential fast growing indigenous
species suitable for planting in the hilly areas. The trees
are of great economic importance for its timber, particularly important for producing plywood, veneer, furniture, hardboard and particleboard. Despite the high economic value of this species, the in vitro regeneration system for this valuable timber species has yet to be established. The development of in vitro regeneration systems will immensely speed up the production of plantlets to meet the current demands on improved planting materials for reforestation, tree plantation and tree improvement programmed. In fact, the establishment of commercial tree
plantations has the potential to supply the bulk of wood
needs on a long-term basis, and thus reduce the harvest
pressure on natural forests for wood production to an acceptable level. An on-going project at UNIMAS has
established the micropropagation protocols for largescale
propagation of plantlets and development of an
in vitro regeneration system for genetic modification
of S. parvifolia Dyer parvifolia.

Ergonomically Designed Mechanical Device for Faster Healing of Open Fractures of the Tibia

The number of motorcycle accidents in Malaysia is on the rise. Such accidents typically result in fractures of the lower limb, especially the tibia. With the use of external fixators and plastic surgical techniques, many of the severe fractures have been salvaged when they would have been amputated previously. Studies on animals have shown that one of the main factors affecting healing of bone fractures is through increasing an axial load on the bone. Bone heals faster when there is an increased weight loading or axial compression at the fracture site, because when stress is put on a fractured limb, there is an increase in blood supply to the muscles surrounding the fracture and this will bring in the necessary nutrient components for healing. Furthermore, the rate of infection may be reduced due to an increase in the efficacy of the tissue defense mechanism from the increase in blood supply. This has led doctors to recommend patients to bear weight on the fractured leg while it is immobilized with an external fixator. However, most post-accident patients have difficulty in controlling their movements in the erect ambulatory position. An ergonomically designed mechanical device that can help to increase the rate of union in the healing of open fractures of the tibia has been developed at UNIMAS. The device is presently being tested in local hospitals.

Dengue Vaccine for the Future

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in partnership
with Venture Technologies Sdn Bhd (VT) and Bavarian
Nordic (BN) have genetically engineered MVA (a modified
vaccinia virus, known to be a safe smallpox vaccine)
to contain genes from dengue virus. Antigens from dengue
virus are then produced by recombinant MVA. Various
recombinant MVA constructs have been generated
which express different dengue virus antigens. These antigens are highly immunogenic and elicit antibodies able
to neutralize dengue viruses in vitro. Three rabbits immunized with recombinant MVA-dengue had a strong immune
response to dengue NS I. The titre of the antibody
response for the rabbits immunized with MVA-dengue
was 1:100,000. Immunization of mice with a liquid and a
freeze-dried formulation showed a good response against
Dengue 2 with also a cross-reactive response against other
dengue serotypes.

Radial Flow Bioreactor for Bioartificial Liver Assist System

The bioartificial liver assist system (BALS) is expected to become an effective treatment as a bridge for patients waiting for liver transplantation. Experiment results show that it is not easy to maintain the liver specific function of hepatocytes during operating the BALS because of the leak of oxygen and nutrients. Hence our bioreactor system provides the oxygenator and the radial flow of medium that supplies the nutrient efficiently. The adhesion and growth of the cultured hepatocytes are greatly improved using PTFE non-woven fabrics coated with PAU. Its functional activities were established after being kept for one week at high value in this bioreactor system. Results indicate that PTFE non-woven fabric coated with PAU and radial flow technique is the best bioreactor for BALS.

Patellar Reflex Using LVDT

Medical electronics could be considered as a one of the bright field recently, due to the advancement of technology development and materials. In medical practices, there is a lot of medical procedure that has been utilized of technology. In neurologist areas, deep tendon reflexes are the important physical sign for neurological diagnosis since every patient can has their normal and abnormal reflex response depend on underlying pathology. The system is capable to detect abnormality of deep tendon reflex and determine whether individual have normal upper motor neuron lesion or lower motor neuron lesion with the support from other neurological examination. The deep tendon reflex level easily detected by the system after the patellar tendon is tap. The system also capable of detect the differentiate level graded based on knee displacement extension using Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) in LabVIEW 8.0 and level graded become more accurate and remove contradicts among medical practitioners regarding the correct level. It also works as a tool for reflex pattern analysis and capable to standardize the findings. With the advancement of this area, it is vital to have a system that capable to manage all the medical data electronically. Basically, the ideas of this project is to come out ith a system that capable to observe, capture, analyze the reflex level of any patients and display the result on the personal computer.

USB 12-Lead ECG System

Hearts disease has been known as among the main killer in the current society. Many research has been carried out in overcoming heart disease and in identifying ways to detect them for early treatment. Even though, there are machines available such as the electrocardiogram and echo-cardiogram, these can be used only for clinical purposes and are not suitable for research.
Lately, Malaysian cardiologists, in-line with related international medical organizations, are doing research in relating and ECG parameter, QT dispersion, with the Myocardium Infarction (MI). QT dispersion is a potential indicator of Myocardial Infarction/Heart Attack - occurs when blood supply to parts of the heart is interrupted. However, this is measured manually using the clinical ECG machine. Therefore, this is seen as holding back Malaysian advancement in the research of biomedical field.
This system is able to digitally record and review the 12-lead ECG, and is able to provide critical ECG parameters such as the heart and QT Dispersion in real-time intervals. This eliminates the effort to measure the ECG manually and is helpful in handling a large number of patients.
This system is helpful is assisting cardiologists in discovering new phenomena in cardiovascular system and may provide other parameter measurement in the cardiologists field of research. Using signal processing techniques, these are done automatically with consistency and reliability. Furthermore, it opens a gateway for the development of digital Malaysia ECG database for future research in the biomedical field.
