Fruit ripening is a genetically programmed process involving gene expression and coordination of various biochemical and physiological changes through the activation or repression of specific genes. Different sets of genes are expressed in specific tissues and in different stages of fruits ripening. Thus, understanding the underlying mechanisms in gene expression is a major step towards identifying and improving fruit quality. The aim of this study is to develop an expression map of the numerous genes involved in the ripening process of pineapples. This is done through the isolation of short single reads of pineapple cDNAs, know as Expressed Sequences Tags (ESTs).
