The STI Facility and Equipment Inventory Survey 2012/2013 was carried out as a continuous exercise to obtain updated and comprehensive data on the STI facilities and equipment available in Malaysia. This was important as the number of STI facilities and equipment has been steadily increasing over the years attributed to the growing number of research and development (R&D) institutions such as universities, centres of excellence and high-tech industries.

STI facility is defined as the place where research and scientific activities carried out such as a laboratory, the monitoring center and place of testing. STI equipment is equipment used to support STI activities, including research, testing, and monitoring that has cost more than RM200,000.00 for each instrument.

Hence, the data is important for policymakers and researchers in identifying the availability of STI facilities and equipment in the country. This will also promote efficient management of resources by encouraging sharing of STI equipment at various facilities in different organisations nationwide. In addition, it will also assist government agencies and other organisations in determining the need for acquisition of new science and technology assets in the future.

Graf bar di atas menunjukkan taburan penyelidik dan pakar yang telah didaftarkan dalam sistem NMDS sehingga Bulan Jun 2018 berdasarkan 9 Division bidang kepakaran (Field of Research-FOR) yang disenaraikan dalam Malaysian Research and Development Classification System (MRDCS) versi keenam. Palang berwarna ungu menunjukkan jumlah pakar manakala palang berwarna kuning menunjukkan jumlah penyelidik. Bidang Natural Sciences mencatatkan bilangan yang tertinggi bagi kedua-dua kategori penyelidik (1,946) dan pakar (1,913). Bilangan data yang kedua tertinggi adalah dalam bidang  Engineering And Technology dengan bilangan penyelidik sebanyak 1,863 dan bilangan pakar sebanyak 1,664. Bilangan data yang terendah bagi kategori penyelidik adalah bidang  Humanities iaitu sebanyak 386 manakala bagi kategori pakar adalah sebanyak 308 dari bidang   Biotechnology.

Nota: Medan pengisian bagi FOR dalam pangkalan data NMDS bukanlah mandatori. Justeru, jumlah yang dinyatakan di atas adalah berdasarkan data yang telah diterima daripada pembekal data MASTIC sehingga Jun 2018

Summary

Based on Graph, there were 2,776 data on S&T organisations that has been registered in the database consisting of 68 non-governmental organisations, 118 government research institutes, 454 institutions of higher learning and 2,136 private companies.

Summary

The classification of innovative and non-innovative respondents based on business sector is shown in the figure above. Based on the number of respondents from the manufacturing and services sectors, majority of the innovative respondents came from the services sector with 62%, while the remaining were from the manufacturing sector with 38%. On the other hand, the highest non-innovative companies were from manufacturing sector with 58% as compared to service sector with 42%.

Summary

The figure show the number of products / technologies according 9 fields of research based on sixth edition Malaysian Research and Development Classification (MRDCS). The bar chart shows that the fields of Enginearing and Technology are the main areas of product / technology  that have the potential to be commercialized while fields of Economics, Bussiness and Management product / technology least to be commercialized.

The figure shows the highest innovative companies according to types of ownership are Private Limited (Sdn. Bhd.) companies in both sectors with 70.56% and 59.35% for public limited businesses respectively. On the other hand, the lowest forms of innovative companies were Partnership business with 5.17% for manufacturing and 6.13% for services as presented

Summary

The figure show that the Business Enterprise (BE) sector has remained as the largest contributor to spur of R&D activities in Malaysia until 2016. The Business Enterprise (BE) sector is major exploiter on that year (RM10,006 million, 56.58%). The second major contributer in R&D is Higher Learning Institution (HLI), with the value of RM6,041 million (34.16%). Vice versa, the minor contributer goes to Government Research Institutes (GRI) RM1,627 million (9.20%) and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) RM12 million (0.06%).
