The table above shows the position of Malaysia compared to other selected countries in the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) for the years 2013-2018. Malaysia is ranked 22nd in 2018 report compared to 24th position in 2017, moves up two (2) positions. Input data Malaysia to WCY coordinated by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and MESTECC is one of the Ministries which has contributed data for this report (Pillar: Infrastructure Scientific).

The graph above shows a comparison of gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) as compared to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for selected countries. The report shows that in 2018, Malaysia was ranked 24th out of 63 countries, moves up five (5) positions compared to the previous year.

The graph above shows the Business Expenditure on R&D (BERD) relatives to GDP. In 2018, Malaysia was maintained its 28th position out of 63 countries with the BERD / GDP ratio of 0.68%.

The graph shows a comparison on Full Time Equivalent (FTE) of R&D personnel for selected countries. FTE indicate the period of time used by R&D personnel to conduct R&D activities. In 2018 report, the FTE of Malaysia was 82.4 thousand and placed at 21st rank out of 63 countries.
