He profiles several people striking out to find "balance". You'll meet an entrepreneur, a bartender, an an accoutant, among others. You'll hear their stories, their challenges, their insights, and the critical lessons they learned.

Duncan contands the last thing we need amid life's inherent ibbalance is another attempt at a how-to formula for perfect balance--equal parts work and life. DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR SEAWATER DESALINATION PLANTS | Request

DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR SEAWATER DESALINATION PLANTS

Seawater desalination is a coastal-based industry. The growing number of desalination plants worldwide and the increasing size of single facilities emphasis the need for greener desalination technologies and more sustainable desalination projects. Two complementing approaches are the development and implementation of best available technology (BAT) standards and practice guidelines for environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies. While BAT is a technology-based approach, which favours state of the art technologies that reduce resource consumption and waste emissions, EIA aims at minimizing impacts at a site and project-specific level through environmental monitoring, evaluation of impacts and mitigation where necessary. This book contains a comprehensive evaluation and synthesis of the potential environmental impacts of desalination plants, with emphasis on the marine environment and aspects of energy use, followed by the development of strategies for impact mitigation. A concept for BAT for seawater desalination technologies is proposed, in combination with a methodological approach for the EIA of desalination projects. The scope of the EIA studies are outlined, including environmental monitoring, toxicity and hydrodynamic modeling studies and the usefulness of multi-criteria analysis as a decision support tool for EIAs is explored and used to compare different intake and pretreatment options for seawater reverse osmosis plants.

IT'S OKAY TO MANAGE YOUR BOSS

Get what you need from your boss

In this follow-up to the bestselling It's Okay to Be the Boss, Bruce Tulgan argues that as managers demand more and more from their employees, they are also providing them with less guidance than ever before. Since the number one factor in employee success is the relationship between employees and their immediate managers, employees need to take greater responsibility for getting the most out of that relationship. Drawing on years of experience training managers and employees, Tulgan reveals the four essential things employees should get from their bosses to guarantee success at work.

  • Shows employees how to ask for what they need to succeed in their high-pressure jobs
  • Shatters previously held beliefs about how employees should manage up
  • Outlines what employees must get from their managers: clear expectations; the skills needed to perform their jobs; honest feedback, recognition or rewards

A novel approach to managing up, It's Okay to Manage Your Boss is an invaluable resource for employees who want to work more effectively with their managers.

It identifies emerging IP reform proposals and experiments, indicating first how more rigor and independence can be built into the granting of IP rights so that genuine innovations are recognized. In 5 Minds for the Future, bestselling author Howard Gardner shows how we will each need to master "five minds" that the fast-paced future will demand:

  • The disciplined mind, to learn at least one profession, as well as the major thinking (science, math, history, etc.) behind it

  • The synthesizing mind, to organized the massive amounts of information and communicate effectively to others

  • The creating mind, to revel in unasked questions and uncover new phenomena and insightful apt answers

  • The respectful mind, to appreciate the differences between human beings and understand and work with all persons

  • The ethical mind, to fulfill one's responsibilities as both a worker and a citizen

Without these "minds," we risk being overwhelmed by information, unable to succeed in the workplace, and incapable of the judgement needed to thrive both personally and professionally.
